It really annoys me, because they could have completely overhauled summoner with the introduction of whips. Summoner could have gone from a frail class that depended on dodging and using other classes weapons to a "melee light" class that had better ranged capabilities than melee.
Minion and sentry damage could be reduced, whip damage bonuses could be increased so there's an incentive to use whips, summoner armor defense could be increased, being higher than ranged or mage, but worse than melee. Summoner would have no longer have had to be a class that relied on the weapons of other classes to be a viable class for normal players and not just for seasoned players who are gods at dodging enemies and bosses.
It also annoys me they didn't give any new accessories for summoner this update. All the other classes got something (Example: Melee>several new shields, Mage>Several new combos involving mana flower and celestial magnet, Ranger>New scopes and quivers) while Summoner got nothing.
They should've gotten a new accessory pertaining to whips. It could've acted as a summoner varient of the yoyo bag, giving whips better range, attack speed, and knockback.
The berserker's glove does affect whips and benefit summoner's with an extra 7 defense, but cmon that's a melee accessory.
You know what? Don't use whips. Noone forces you to.
Pre hardmode summoner is still pure garbage though. The worst thing is that it doesn't need to be that bad, it's that the devs made the two earliest weapons rng drops and the armor gated behind a boss that forces you to use weapons from other classes to beat.
None of the other classes are like that. The only other class that has a rocky start compared to summoner is mage, and that can be fixed with a few nights of star gathering and mining for diamonds and platinum.
What's about Bee armor?
Pre hardmode is 5 minions.
Pre mechanical bosses is 6 minions with spider armor. Forbidden armor is now summon/mage hybrid with 5 minions.
Don't complain about something that isn't true..
You support your summons with weapons from other classes, same way a lot of other classes summon something to support them, since they still have the 1 innate summon and sentry slot.
Maybe you should use a better whip than the first one in the game? How many people complain about copper sword making melee an underpowered class?
