Summoner class.
EDIT: I would like to thank everyone who agrees or disagrees with my opinion for sharing their thoughts under this discussion. I didn't think it would attract so much attention. It is nice that so many people talk to each other and share their ideas. I hope the things that are spoken here will help Terraria and it's producers.

Summoner has the lowest defense and you gave them whips, which does not have any range. I mean, really? I finished the game in the master mod with summoner class, but it was hard. I mean, really, like everything was 1 shotting me. But it is not the problem. It is just ridicious, giving a melee weapon which has a quite short range, to a class that has the lowest defense? It is so foolish, I cant remember how many times did I die just to give my minions a little, like 5 DMG bonus. Did it worth it? No. It did not worth it because I was already killed by (everything).Think about giving summoners a better way to support their minions, or just give whips a little more range.

Dude whips are for trash and events, where you can cleave 5-10 things. Or early mode when you have slime and finch. Just use a range or something for bosses. Hell, summons do so much DPS all you have to do is right click the boss and fly backwards.

Exactly. Whips should have longer range and marginally better knockback, at least enough to halt enemies advancing towards you and lock them in place. Giving a crappy melee weapon to the class with the worst defenses and not give them any knockback aside from the morningstar makes them too risky to use in boss fights that aren't normal or journey difficulty.

It really annoys me, because they could have completely overhauled summoner with the introduction of whips. Summoner could have gone from a frail class that depended on dodging and using other classes weapons to a "melee light" class that had better ranged capabilities than melee.

Minion and sentry damage could be reduced, whip damage bonuses could be increased so there's an incentive to use whips, summoner armor defense could be increased, being higher than ranged or mage, but worse than melee. Summoner would have no longer have had to be a class that relied on the weapons of other classes to be a viable class for normal players and not just for seasoned players who are gods at dodging enemies and bosses.

It also annoys me they didn't give any new accessories for summoner this update. All the other classes got something (Example: Melee>several new shields, Mage>Several new combos involving mana flower and celestial magnet, Ranger>New scopes and quivers) while Summoner got nothing.

They should've gotten a new accessory pertaining to whips. It could've acted as a summoner varient of the yoyo bag, giving whips better range, attack speed, and knockback.

The berserker's glove does affect whips and benefit summoner's with an extra 7 defense, but cmon that's a melee accessory.

Yeah, give the class that has a long-ass energy dragon or 9 glowing swords on his back and still can use any weapon with slightly less damage strong ranged weapons.

You know what? Don't use whips. Noone forces you to.

They did add like 7+ new summon staff items though. So now powering up through hardmode got a lot smoother. Finch, Frog, Sanguine, Blade, Desert Tiger, Terraprisma. Im prolly missing some. IMO Armor is what we really needed. All we got was hallowed helm. NOTHING to help the pre hardmode 1 minion summoner

Apparently a negative speed modifier will give you longer range and a faster speed will make the range even shorter, so Sluggish and Bulky can actually be beneficial.

Pre hardmode summoner is still pure garbage though. The worst thing is that it doesn't need to be that bad, it's that the devs made the two earliest weapons rng drops and the armor gated behind a boss that forces you to use weapons from other classes to beat.

None of the other classes are like that. The only other class that has a rocky start compared to summoner is mage, and that can be fixed with a few nights of star gathering and mining for diamonds and platinum.

Guys we are talking about a CLASS that doesnt have it is MAIN WEAPON. You are telling me to use a sniper rifle or bat scepter? Maybe a yoyo? Then why is there a class called summoner, if I am going to rely on an other classes weapon?

I mean, we dont really have a main weapon for summoner. They added whips, and nearly no one using them, because they are garbage. We all know it. Using another class weapon is not a solve to this problem.

What's about Bee armor?
Pre hardmode is 5 minions.
Pre mechanical bosses is 6 minions with spider armor. Forbidden armor is now summon/mage hybrid with 5 minions.
Don't complain about something that isn't true..

Its 'main weapon' is the summons. If they aren't your main weapon, you ain't a summoner.

You support your summons with weapons from other classes, same way a lot of other classes summon something to support them, since they still have the 1 innate summon and sentry slot.

Only thing you can do with that "main weapon" is to summon your minions and order them to attack something, and it doesnt even really works, since their ai is trash.

Whips are a trade off, get close for more damage and risk being hit, or don't and be safe. Summoner already has braindead damage dealing abilities, all you have to do is just focus on evading.

Maybe you should use a better whip than the first one in the game? How many people complain about copper sword making melee an underpowered class?

I said 5 DMG because only good whips you can get is after fighting with bosses like plantera(for dungeon) or empress of the light. So what is the point at using that 5 DMG bonus for dying, when fighting with plantera? And the point is not the damage. The range. As I said, we are talking about 30 def here. Giving them an weapon with low range is foolish, since nobody is going to use it, and continue using sniper rifles and bat scepters. Then why add it?
