Was the black spot a mistake?

I love the mount itself, the stats, look everything about it. But after getting it from the pirate invasion, me and my friends that have been doing a master mode play through feel like its to op for how early you get it.

I've had no incentive to build arenas for the mechanical bosses or even craft good wings. I've even considered losing my boots as I don't need to worry about running super fast. I have had no incentive to build railroads or even teleporters to get from point a or b.

It detracts from the hardcore part of master mode. Instead of fighting my way through the corruption/crimson or jungle I can just fly right over the dangerous biomes with ease. You could argue doing a expert play through could be harder solely because you don't have this item.

My solution:
Make it post-moon lord drop for the flying dutchman. This way you still have the hardcore feeling of the play through and you reward those that play master mode with a awesome mount at the end!.

Don't mistake inconvenient for challenge, basically.

Though I've grown more jaded over that kind of logic from how many games hand you a samey treadmill even in single player and call it "progression". Big part of why Starbound remains uninstalled while this game is getting dusted off.

Interesting thoughts, though I don't think it's that over powered.

There are several mounts that are better than it under the right circumstances:

• UFO (Cosmic Car Keys) and Broomstick: Better maneuverability and acceleration (albeit half max horizontal speed)
  
• Cute Fishron (Shrimpy Truffle): Superior in every respect when it's raining or under water.

Post-moonlord it would be useless. Not much people play too much after the final boss, because you literally did almost everything in the game. Maybe post-golem or something, or change the drop to 0.05 or smth, but still move it to post-plantera/golem.

It is. Really is a problem. My group completed an entire master play through, all bosses in exactly one week. We spent like 4.5 days of that week getting up to that point successfully then the beating all of the rest of hardmode using that mount.

It is amazing on all fights expect maybe Empress due to the extremely slow start up time when flying up'n'down or it's poor zero to top speed. The UFO or witches broom is better (both of which you will most likely get before fighting Empress). It ruins progression but at the same time I'd like to not see anything else get nerfed.

I really like your reasoning behind what you said. I originally thought of having it post moon lord because I consider it being just a nudge better than the UFO overall and having it come later in game would allow the UFO some time to shine.

But I think post golem would work really well too as you can choose between the UFO or Black spot. Like I said earlier I think the Black spot is better but not everyone would agree so having them choose between a high max speed or high acceleration doesn’t sound like a bad idea! Having them available at the same time to choose what suits play style best would be epic.

EDIT: I remembered you can quickly accelerate with the black spot when you dash with your character before deploying the mount. I still could see post golem working though.

It's a bit late to change it now just like that, maybe in a future smaller patch, but I'd wager that it would better find its place as a post-plantera drop for how good it is.

For when its obtained and its power I think it is overpowered. The non mount alternative is Wings+Empress Accessory for Infinite flight. But thats 2 slots you can use in Master Mode to get more survivability. While the mount is just sitting cozy in the Mount slot and you can spend those 2 slots on w/e you want. For example this was my first playthrough where I crafted wings but I never ended up using them due to Invasion happened just shortly after and the Mount dropped.

It is far superior to the UFO, Fishron that are obtained at much later stages of the Game. (I dont think anyone goes after Duke at the start of Hardmode on Master :p)

But at the end as an overall experience It didnt really ruin our/my playthrough. Maybe the others in my group should have used wings for better dodging because they kept dying to stuff while in the mount :p

Does not change the fact that people can and did fight Fishron right after hardmode start.

It is not "far superior" I advise you trying to fight the Empress with the Black spot at day and then with Fishron/UFO and come back saying the Black Spot is better.
