Was the black spot a mistake?
I love the mount itself, the stats, look everything about it. But after getting it from the pirate invasion, me and my friends that have been doing a master mode play through feel like its to op for how early you get it.

I've had no incentive to build arenas for the mechanical bosses or even craft good wings. I've even considered losing my boots as I don't need to worry about running super fast. I have had no incentive to build railroads or even teleporters to get from point a or b.

It detracts from the hardcore part of master mode. Instead of fighting my way through the corruption/crimson or jungle I can just fly right over the dangerous biomes with ease. You could argue doing a expert play through could be harder solely because you don't have this item.

My solution:
Make it post-moon lord drop for the flying dutchman. This way you still have the hardcore feeling of the play through and you reward those that play master mode with a awesome mount at the end!.

let me know what you guys think about this mount! And remember please be respectful and stay civil!

EDIT: Grammar

I reckon make it an Expert mode drop. Other than that, it sounds awesome! I haven't obtained it yet, but I'm willing to!

It is in fact a Master Mode only drop.

But infinite flight at the start of Hardmode is a bit too good. Should be better if it was really slow or only could drop post plantera or something.

Oh ok. Well, I think it's reasonable. But it shouldn't overcome the Cosmic Car Key in stats. Like I understand you can get it early hardmode since you are now playing the most difficult mode in the game.

With my solution you would get the car keys before the black spot, the car keys also does have better strafing capabilities, but I understand where you are coming from.

Or.... better idea! Make it post-golem.

Our group completed Master Mode yesterday and I must say I disliked 'The Black spot' It felt like we were cheesing the rest of the progression as soon as we got them.

For when its obtained and its power I think it is overpowered. The non mount alternative is Wings+Empress Accessory for Infinite flight. But thats 2 slots you can use in Master Mode to get more survivability. While the mount is just sitting cozy in the Mount slot and you can spend those 2 slots on w/e you want. For example this was my first playthrough where I crafted wings but I never ended up using them due to Invasion happened just shortly after and the Mount dropped.

It is far superior to the UFO, Fishron that are obtained at much later stages of the Game. (I dont think anyone goes after Duke at the start of Hardmode on Master :p)

But at the end as an overall experience It didnt really ruin our/my playthrough. Maybe the others in my group should have used wings for better dodging because they kept dying to stuff while in the mount :p

I see! thanks for the interesting perspective of start to finish with it! I have noticed that wings do help me dodge shots better as the vertical climb of the mount is quite slow.

The problem is how easy it is to complete pirate invasion and flying dutchman, you can just stuck him somewhere and kill him easily as hell
The problem s people wanting nerfs for an old game SHAME ON YOU lot. Leave the game well alone they have already made it too linear.

That is an interesting approach to the problem, haven't thought of it like that but absolutely true. I do wish it acted more like skeletron in a sense and having it fly around alot more. That would be epic.

The Black Spot is a meh mount in my opinion...? It really does mess with manouverability in the air as you slide into one direction while trying to turn back. Having it be a Post Moon Lord drop would be heavly underwhelming for what it really is. Not to add that Pirate Invasion is pretty hard if gotten too early.

Also how the ♥♥♥♥ did this discussion turn from a talk about a pirate ship mount to how "Minecraft is a better sandbox then Terraria"? smol edit: this last bit is irrelevant already-

Are we really gonna call 2 skips as justification of Terraria's non-linearness? I think the game is already linear ever since 1.2 as far as I remember, 1.4 was just over-filling the bucket, negligible. They should also change the sandbox tag to sandbox-lite, it is a joke compared to Minecraft and Starbound, correct me if I'm wrong

Progression wise it does feel quite linear to me. You have the freedom to choose your play style and class and such but the order of events is linear. Yes you can beat duke before mechanical bosses but I don’t know why you wouldn’t do mechanical first. The real question is, is it a bad thing? can’t speak for star bound but Minecraft the order of events is also linear being get wood, go to nether, blaze powder, stronghold, kill dragon. I personally enjoy a linear progression system, especially the server I got going with friends.

But the sandbox part still lives in terraria, more than ever especially with journey mode and all its customizable goodness. All the amazing builds the community makes are a testament to terrarias sandbox potential. Mods also allows it to become a epic sandbox!

Pretty much. I honestly cannot wait for a compatibility of Journey's Mode with mods.

I dont think it's that bad, I actually have more trouble fighting the twins, duke fishron, empress of light, golem and cultist with the black spot than I do with just wings. The black spot is nice and all but like sometimes it takes it a bit too long to speed up to make quick turns to dodge some attacks. The only fight it made easier for me was mainly plantera, but that still required me to dig out a huge room to fight it using the black spot.
