Cant place living wood walls over dirt walls and the hammer is not working for some reason

i want to use a living tree's underground for HQ but i cant for some reason remove walls with auto replace or the hammer it self i already tried starting from an edge, is driving me insane


Edit: i actually found out why it was so weird for me, since living tree walls now spawn gnomes (i believe) they no longer count as safe and are more like dirt walls....... its kinda wacky, since you can make the exact same wall and will not spawn anything thanks for the help doe

You have to start from an edge at which you can already mine- This sometimes means starting up at the surface and hammering your way all the way down to the place you want to build. You may also not have enough hammer power to mine the specific background in question?

Worst case, maybe try using bombs or explosives- both can blow up backwall regardless of whether or not it should be mineable...though this will also put a hole in your tree, so. Use carefully.

You have to begin removing the wall from where it begins. If you find an edge of the wall that's next to open air, you should be able to begin removing the wall from there.

It is a measure so you don't just hammer holes into the background in caves so you have daylight instead of torches.
