Terraria
Still don't understand crates/biomes when fishing
So I've flooded one of those pit falls in the dungeon pre-hardcore so I could get the dungeon crates. I just keep getting generic underground fish (bass, specular) and wooden crates.

Can someone tell me what is up? I swear that much water should fit the conditions I see online.

Hmm... But do you have enough fishing power (100 or more)?
Is there a water requirement? I've just been using water lakes formed naturally but I haven't really gotten into the fishing so far so if I need to be terraforming that would be nice to know!

Once you get Fisherman Pocket Guide you can easily measure whether the pond is suitable or not. If it's gives fishing penalty in % it needs more water. 300 tiles of water is enough.

Thanks, I somehow missed that 1st time through. Thats alot of water though. I'm going to be doing another pre-HM run through a bit slower this time as I forgot I don't like HM without a developed world and ended up rushing through pre-HM lol.

Oh interesting, I'm on 55% with my rod and Bait, I didn't know 100% was needed for crates.

Usually the more the better and below 50 means junk will appear in fishing. I had 240 once, I guess 250+ is possible too (3x chum bucket, angler set, earing, tackle bag, golden rod, m. bait, early morning, storm or rain, full moon...)

EDIT. Wiki says it's 300 if you also add fishing potion... also biome crate catch rate caps at 1/10 with crate potion if my math is correct.

Beyond your fishing bait and rod, the following odds also influence your fishing power:
-Weather (rain is best, affects underground)
-Time of day/night (90 seconds after morning, 90 seconds before nightfall, waxing moons, and full moons are best. Affects underground too. I recommend placing grandfather clocks or wearing watches to keep track.)
-Fishing potions
-Fishing armor
-Fishing accessories (high test fishing line and angler earring, they're questing rewards)
-Large pools of water (BIGGEST FACTOR. Exceeding 400 blocks of water yields top results)
-Crate potions (Huge factor)

Fishing power enhances how soon fish/crates bite your hook. Sufficient power grants a chance for rare catches; extreme fishing power makes for frequent rare catches.

EDIT: The game uses whichever bait is in the highest row in your inventory. If there are multiple baits on the same row, it picks the left-most bait. VERY IMPORTANT, it's the difference between using Master Bait and using Monarch butterflies.

Doesn't the bobber need to land over the deep parts? I could have sworn I only got trash if I land it over any shallow area.
About the size of your lake, this picture illustrates what tiles are counted:

https://terraria.gamepedia.com/File:Fishing_dimensions.png

So try to eliminate overhangs, if it's feasible.
and another Dungeon fishing req from the wiki is that the lake needs to be below -3, So you can't just make a lake in upper tunnel and get the goodies.
Water pool detection works like this:
-Look at the entire unbroken surface of your pool of water.
It scans from end to end, then straight downward.
Downward scanning won't turn sideways when beneath the water.
Water gets ignored if it's not directly beneath the surface of the water. Submerged blocks will also hide water beneath it.

Visual example:

OOOO~~~~~~~~~~~OOOOOO
OOOOOO---------------OOOOOOO
OOO******-----OOO---OOOOOOO
OOO******-----******---******OOOO
OOO******-----******---******OOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

O = rock
~ = surface of the water
-- = recognized water for fishing
** = water being ignored and not used for fishing
