New player here. What is this about torches?
I initially thought torches, like in Minecraft, were there to decrease the likelihood of monsters spawning. I put them everywhere. Now I heard that there is some mechanic implemented that reduces your item luck and damage if you use the 'wrong' torch in a certain bioms.
Do I now have to remove each and every 'wrong' torch I placed on and under the ground to fix my luck again? I feel royally ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over.

Just use the right torches where you plan to farm or fight bosses?

Is it that big a deal?
Most biome specific torches give off ♥♥♥♥♥♥ colored light that isn't good at illuminating anything. So it's a little bit of a big deal.
Turn off colored lighting to white light. Easy.

And this messes up any colored lighting players use in their houses or whatever else they built.

Sorry, but do you have anything else other than half-measures that interfere with someone elses enjoyment of the game?

this explains it all
I still do not understand it fully. Holding a correct torch results in good luck but what happens if you are near a normal torch while holding it? How does it work with treasure cheasts?
Guess I have to read the wiki in order to not ♥♥♥♥ myself over.

The thing is this. If you have "the wrong torch" within range (40 tiles, so basically, if you can see it on your screen) it gives a negative value (-0.5), holding if you have another torch which is the right type you usually gain more of a positive value (+1.0) so your total point here is +0.5.
Which results in a +0.1 to your super secret luck stat.

Having a positive luck stat gives that much chance to double another chance.
So if your luck is +0.5 you have a 50% to double a couple of things.

Say you are looking for the Tally Counter, a rare accessory with 1% drop chance in a normal world. If you have your +0.5 luck you have a 50% that the drop rate is increased to 2% when you kill a Dark Caster.
If you have a -0.5 luck stat you have a 50% that the drop rate is decreased to 0.5%.
In all other cases, the works as normal.

Use ultrabrights. Good lighting, better view, no negative luck and might give a bonus in some biome. Edit: Downside: Seems to be a relatively rarely sold by traveling merchants.

Edit: Is that actually a 1% drop? I've gotten like 10 of those out of the dungeon and killed far less than 1000 enemies. Guess torch luck thing might actually be legit then..

Torch Luck does not apply in the Dungeon or Lihzahrd Temple.

Wow, what a response from Red. Isn't Terraria supposed to be a sandbox, where each player is meant to be creative and play in their own way?

Careful using gems for torches, you can use them to craft magic staves and stuff early on that do some crazy damage.

Where are you getting that from because like I said, I've gotten around 3 times how many Tally Counters I'd have expected (~10 from ~300 killed) if they are really a 1% drop.

Yeah check with the guide if you care. Need some gems but in general topaz and amethyst are really low value gems. Topaz even look like normal so they are a good gem torch to use.

Treasure chests are not affected it only affect rng related things and don't worry this was not a part of Terraria before it may be changed or tweaked soon...

Treasure chest loot Is defined on world generation just like minecraft villager positions and stuff

Pretty sure you have to use walls with torches to reduce spawning in the best ways

In a way yes but that dont mean it should be unbalanced or don't have features to punish the user.... Or that we should not lose money on death etc...

Issue here is that don't make much sense hope it's changes somehow it's a good idea bad execution in my opinion.

Ok. What if i don't want to have anything to do with this system and don't even touch luck/torch mechanics. Will my game be like till 1.4, or will i be somewhat punished for it?

Just use gem torches like topaz or buy 999 ultrabrights and never have to worry again.
Tzyder 20/mai./2020 às 13:03
The way to do this is to give torches their own inventory pocket space. The idea of biome based torches rewarding luck is interesting but in application become forced inventory micro which is not fun.
