All jokes aside I find it very hard to find a sandbox game to my liking, glad you guys can enjoy this game, even if I can't.
Minecraft has a great granddaddy called Dwarf Fortress and it's available for free download.
Hardcore characters.- It's always nice to have a balanced game where you can easily get crushed in seconds and still beat the whole thing with just one live, makes it an intense and adrenalinic experience
Platforming.- Double jumping, hooking, dashing and hovering you way around (until getting wings of course) is as fun as challenging, specialy on the early game, specialy for a hardcore character since falling damage is real. Adds a lot exploring and to fighting, both regular enemies and bosses as well
Speedruning.- Since this is sandbox, there are a lot of diferent categories for speedruning wich can also be spiced up with some challenges and personal goals. Beating Skeletron on the first night without crafting any item was one of my favorite ones for a long time
Mods.- Until recently I had only played vanilla, however the work behind Calamity mod (wich is the only mod I've tried so far) is outstanding, I compare it to play Megaman X and then BOOM Megaman X2. It's basicaly the same engine/grafic setting, but the content adds a whole new layer to it, making it new and refreshing as it gets.
Non-linear progress.- You can certainly explore and get your resources on a "traditional intended" way, like you described before, going through every biome and getting everything in the same order every time. But also, you can be killing wall of flesh before the first night ends. There are few boundries and only latter on with the mandatory boss order things get more structured, but early game is a really free experience, very heavy on RNG too (wich makes every playthrough a new experience, regardless on the game being limited)
Multiplayer.- I've had tons of fun playing with people from the internet, both casualy beating bosses or goofing around and serious bussines long term playthrough things. Doing classes and cooperating is always a good feeling, and PvP opens a new spectrum to the game, and a very good reason to save those Invisibility potions :P
Also, there are some really neat servers that turn the game into an MMORPG kinda thing, with experience, classes, accounts and all the stuff, pretty sweet work from the community
Personal Challenges.- As I mentioned before, you can always have personal rules or quests to spice things up, my favorite one is the "no crafting challenge", wich is also intersting, for a game with such a huge crafting system, you can actualy beat the whole thing without crafting a single item =0
There are other things like building, making wire systems and creating art work that a lot of people seem to enjoy, but that I don't care about much. Even though, I do enjoy and recognize a beautiful house or structure when I see it, and Terraria has a lot to offer in terms of materials and automatons.
I would maybe add a hunger or stamina bar to it, and moral or mental health factor, just to flavour it up, but as it is, is one of my favourite games of all times =) Hope this gives you a new vision of it, if you haven't tried Hardcore I would strongly recomend it
great game. coming to steam soon, totally renewed
Ahh, good old i was kicked by a bat.
you have to understand that the development of terraria has been a continuous
at first, the game was the eye
then they added king slime
then eater of worlds
and so on, until wall of flesh and hardmode and wow, the game and the after game, for the same price, cool
old one's army is the lattest adition I think, with betsy as a boss, good
so, yeah, I think the concept of "making it more dificult, because is not dificult enough" does not fully apply to terraria, because yeah, expert mode was kinda that, but the content, bosses and so on, is more like keep telling a story, like one piece or something
I feel you, Terraria is quite hard, so hardcore for many people looks like a rubish idea.
Never.The.Less... Terraria is pretty heavy on tec, it has a pretty sweet double jump/hook mechanic and after getting wings and dash... damn son, a whole new level
There are several advices to not die that often at Terraria (for traps, the mechanical lens that sells the engineir at dungeon), but the thing is, dispite it being that hard, it is totally doable, like many many people plays that level, but not that many play hardcore, because now a days there is no tolerance to lost in videogames, save states and check points are too real, like in every damn game I've lately played, so... doing a hardcore run for a game that can take several hours to finish, sounds like a terrible idea. The thing is, Terraria can be beaten in 2 to 3 hours, with a good seed (check for some speedruns if you don't belive me), and early games such as "master blaster" took that long to beat. No password, pure hardcore gaming
If you want, we could try a hardcore run, and I'll prove my point to you
I know it can be beaten quite quickly on a good seed, ON A GOOD SEED, if its a bad seed then it could take way more than it should, in my opinion besides many things i don't like of Terraria is inconsistency, and not just difficutly spikes or anything, its just game not giving you something or giving you something when it shouldn't really do that, or have 10 solar eclipses in a row [well it wasnt 10 in a row, believe i got somewhere around that in 13 in game days] it just sometimes feel like you have to repeat alot for something, exept Expert, i actually found that to be one of my more consistent playtroughs, sure i never beat it, mainly since i forgot to cloud save my world... Still i did alright, even if i had to use Nurse for Skeletron [couldn't beat him, other bosses i did were, mostly alright]
