Is world hopping cheating?
I know I know, it all depends on what you consider cheating, but I need others opinions to make sure that world hopping is something that you can do. Sorry for bugging you guys.

Look, cheating is whatever you decide it is. If you're in singleplayer, you're the only one that can decide what counts as cheating or not. The community can only tell you what they think's most fun, and you've got your answer already. Nobody thinks it changes much.
If you think it'll be less fun to get a Nazar on a new world, then don't. But no one can make up your mind for you.

I would not consider it cheating outright. I see it more like an additional challenge to keep a character tied to just one world, for honor's sake. In my my experience it also gives me motivation to explore more of my world in search for what I need. For example, if my ocean doesn't contain water-walking boots I will sift through every underground pond to find them.

Nah, otherwise u wouldnt be allowed to do it

Well, it's not exactly an "exploit", given that the developers went to the trouble of making character selection and world selection separate choices.

If you start a new world with post-Moon Lord gear, it's not going to be much of a challenge. But is it "cheating" if you e.g. grab an emblem from another world because the Wall still hasn't dropped the one you want after beating it 20 times? Your call.

No, thats why characters can transfer. I tend to avoid it till after finishing since I think the crimson and corruption items fill different niches for any playstyle making runs more unique. Then I go back for 100% if I'm not burned out by the end.

But if you wanna play both to get worm scarf and vampire knives then why not?

It's kinda annoying that speedruns use like 4 or 5 different worlds now though.

So the dupe exploit with wrl and plr files is not cheating? Cause that certainly is allowed and known by the devs due to the way they architected the saves for players and worlds...

What about jumping to worlds that have exposed temple traps (at the entrace) and using them in pre hardmode and early hardmode? You can effectively beat the destroyer without any upgrade to weapons/armor with lots of spiky ball and spear traps.

I would say going to another world would not be cheating unless you bring something back with you, and even then it is questionable because the developers *did* intend for Terraria to be a multiplayer experience where players share what they have. So taking 100 sand blocks from your friend's world isn't that much of an exploit, and IMO isn't cheating, but then consider that you can take advantage of differences in world progress to bring back items and resources you cannot get in your own world yet. So it really depends.

My personal opinion on the matter:

Is world-hopping an exploit? Yes, to varying degrees, but always yes.

However, is it cheating? It depends on what you bring back with you.

If you can get it in your world, too, then it isn't cheating.

If you can't get it in your world but that is the result of different world generation RNG (like water boots, for instance) then it isn't cheating, it is on the same level as sharing between two players.

If you can't get the item or resource in your world *yet* then it is cheating.

Ok i get what you guys are saying, but what i mean is like im in a hardmode world, is it ok to go to a pre hardmode world to get a Nazar?
Like that ya know?

I mean... yes? I don't see how it's an unfair advantage to world hop. Getting to hardmode is hard, most of the better items require a lot of work to get. Bringing them to a fresh world is almost backwards progress, in a way. Sure it makes farming easier, but even that takes work to set up.

Thank you then.

Even if it's marked as solved I'll add my word :P
I consider it as not cheating because worlds in Terraria are limited in size. The explanation of world hopping is just moving to another place (or back and forth if you're moving items).

World-hopping is never an exploit. Why? Because it is the intended feature. At no time is going from one server to another an exploit. By this reasoning, it cannot be labeled as such.
