Game Genre?

Can smb tell me what it this game about? I always wanted to purchase it but never really understood what is the game about. Read reviews and watched gameplays but it's not clear.

Is it a platform? Strategy? What the hell is this about? Thanks

Sandbox. Plus some action/adventure thrown in with it. Think 2D minecraft, but with way more features and progression.
e.g.:
MC: wood<stone<iron<diamond<enchanted diamond
Terraria: wood<copper<iron<silver<gold<demonite<hellstone<etc.
MC: Ender dragon and wither for endgame
Terraria: King slime<EoC<EoW<Queen bee<skeletron<WoF<etc.
MC: forest, jungle, desert, snow, ocean, underground, other dimensions
Terraria: all of the above (except other dimensions), evil biome, undergound variants, hell, etc.
MC: near-infinite world where the thing you're looking for is out there maybe? hopefully?
Terraria: 3 world sizes, all worlds guaranteed certain biomes and mini-biomes, entire distance of world traversed without too much trouble.
