2: I'd probaly say anything that inflicts a powerful debuff but is also not commonly resisted in enemies, such as ichor or cursed flames
2. Fire is good for cave exploration, as your pickaxe will emit fire particles, which create light. Ichor is great for bosses as the debuff causes less defense and therefore more damage. Venom is great for grinding/invasions as the enemies constantly take damage, which allows you to prioritize the most important enemies.
2. Ichor's always handy, Gold can also also be useful for the extra cash if you don't need the damage.
2. I like Venom and Ichor, but sometimes to play around I do Confetti.
1. Targets that are inflicted with Ichor have a lower defense, so if you apply it with your melee weapons, your minions/sentries will deal more damage to those targets.
2. Many people prefer Ichor, because it reduces enemies' defense, but Venom and Cursed Flames are also good for constant damage, in case you can't constantly hit the target, or simply want the enemy's health to constantly drain. I don't recommend using Confetti, Fire, or Poison. Poison works on most enemies, but if possible you should us Venom instead. Confetti has no effect, aside from creating confetti, which can lag your game. Fire isn't very effective against most hardmode enemies, as it deals damage very slowly (~1dmg/1sec) and many hardmode enemies aren't even effected by it.
