What changes for a Mediumcore character that does not change for a Softcore character besides not wanting to lose one's items? What makes a simple 15-block drop more intimidating for a Mediumcore character when they've only got four blocks to jump across? I think you've just illustrated my point quite well here; if Terraria is as easy for you as you say it is with a Mediumcore character, would you notice much of a difference with a Softcore character? Without the pressure not to die, there is nothing that could possibly constitute as "challenging" for a Mediumcore character. Or a Hardcore character, for that matter. If a new player doesn't mind creating new characters over and over again, they are learning just as much albeit spending more time in Character Creation that a Softcore character would be. The mindset a player has does not make the game itself more challenging. It only changes how they react to the game.
Exactly.
EDIT: Added to response.
If I am a new player and I make a Hardcore character, then I die somehow, then I create a new hardcore character, and I do this over and over again, all the while dying in the derpiest, dumbest ways possible, how did Terraria suddenly become more difficult? Let's say I absolutely love spending time creating new characters and getting new items all over again. Am I learning any faster or only spending more time creating new characters?
Think about it, "mate," you aren't talking about challenge here. You are talking about tedium. I get as much challenge from losing a character as I do losing money. All I lose is time.
How do you get any more skill dying over and over again with a Hardcore character if you don't give a crap about dying in the first place? How do you get less skill with a Softcore character if you are afraid of losing all those gold coins you collected? It is all mindset. Difficulty has nothing to do with it.
And you can beat Terraria with any character setting, Softcore, Mediumcore or Hardcore. It doesn't matter. Most bosses despawn when you die, anyway. A new player with a Hardcore character will still beat Terraria. A Softcore character will just do it more quickly. And since they will feel less discouraged and have more time on their hands, they may keep defeating each boss over and over again and become better at playing that way.
EDIT:
Dude, you have no idea what kind of a player I am. Did you get that assumption from looking at my screenshots? Stop trying to assume anything about people you don't know.
Using a Hardcore character does not "force" you to care more about dying. That is nonsense. One of the reasons I used to play Hardcore was so that I could create new characters. You can care more about dying with a Hardcore character, but not necessarily.
Yes, that is very true. But I also love survival. I used to play on a server where the administrator not only made you play with Hardcore characters, you were perm-banned from the server if if you died. I've played on a few of his servers by now and he is still in my Friends List. Bet you didn't know that from looking at my profile.
EDIT: Added a sentence.
speaking about difficulties.. it even says in the character creation screen that SOFTCORE MEDCORE AND HARDCORE are all DIFFICULTY SETTINGS. re-logic probably know that better than we do. and they named them "difficulties" for a reason.
What? You are treating Hardcore deaths like a physical barrier against game progression. There is nothing to prevent me from completing the game if I am a new player and I enjoy dying over and over again. The world itself is still there so if I am smart I will put everything I have that isn't in my hotbar in a chest. All I am doing is spending more time in character creation and while getting more items.
You can stop use these absurdly childish ad-hominems on me now. You are making rediculous claims that have no basis in reality.
Because you just made a very blind assumption that all I do in Terraria is build. The level of Narcissism from you is really starting to smell up the room now.
Huh? Oh really? Wow. Narcissism and Solipsism. Must be my lucky day. Yeah, I don't think this will go anywhere. This is like talking to an 8 year old. Oh wait...
Just kidding.
Dude, I very much know what I am talking about. I would like to have further discussions with you that are more rational and transparent than this. I think you're a good player but you need to be better than this when it comes to discussion because right now you don't come across as very mature.
EDIT 1 & 2: Added to response.
