Timeline from a new player to endgame
Hi. Just wondering what peoples timelines are like for this game. I am new to this game and I think it would be helpful for me to know how people get to endgame. Starting from your first world ever made, how did you eventually be able to do endgame things.

Grind.

Yes but you dont have any gear yet. You cant grind if you dont have the things to begin grinding.

You start with basic tools to help you grind.

Grind isnt helping anyone... specifics please. where do you start, what should your next goal be. how did you get to where you are now. Grinding in hardmode when the things take 30+ seconds to die each is not a helpful grind.

You want an in-depth explanation? Youtube or some ♥♥♥♥, not me lol

When I first started, I started in a group with friends (they had played the game before) so I wasn't without guidence the whole way through.

You enter Terraria for the first time and for me personally, it was an information overload. This of course is easier with time but you will be hard pressed to enjoy the game without some sort of guidance. In my 500+ hours of playing (not near as much as most), these are my short term goals when playing on a new playthrough:

  • Set up a temporary shelter at spawn (small wood house, protected from outside threats when spawning)
  • Scout out the surface lair of the world, finding out which biomes are where, from left to right, ocean to ocean, picking up chests and breaking pots along the way. Expect to die a few times
  • There is no bad place to build a home, but since you have scouted the surface, you may have found somewhere to build a base/home. Gather materials and head to your location to build.
  • Each NPC needs a home (your first NPC is the guide). Each NPC needs a suitable room to stay in. They require sufficient space, a chair, table, light source and a door (advanced options are there, research yourself).
  • On the subject of the first NPC (guide), use him A LOT. He is under rated to both new and old players alike. He will tell you what your resources do. Abuse him.
  • Once you have established a base with around 3-6 rooms to begin with, it's time to explore and mine. I suggest exploring a natural cave in a grass/forest biome rather than Jungle and Ice Biome to begin with, as a new player may find it challanging.
  • Ropes are your best friend, they will help you ascend/descend caves when you don't have the right stuff to navigate around.
  • Be sure to kill lots of slimes before entering caves and making enough torches. You don't want to go in with a low amount, though the pots should prove useful to what you broke before.
  • Wooden Platforms are also your friend. They will help when traversing gaps in the world.
  • You will find chests in "abandoned structures" on your travels. Be sure to loot them and reap the rewards. As said earlier, pick up chests after looting them (mine them). They will be good storage.
  • Destroy all cobwebs on your journey! These will be used for silk, which eventually will be used for your bed (spawn point)
  • Don't get too greedy! If your inventory is full from spelunking in caves, use a recall potion to leave. You don't want to die with your cash on you, it all adds up.
  • Repeat this process over and over, and you may have found a Suspicious Looking Eye on your travels. Use this at night time after you have geared up, and you will fight your first boss (probably the first).

These are only short term goals, and doesn't nearly cover everything that you need to do. As the guy above me said, youtube or the like would be far more useful than this text from an average player.

Have fun and good luck!

There are plenty of written walkthroughs. I've at least seen some for un-modded, I've only seen boss-progression lists for modded.

I don't have that much expertise, but I would recomend starting hardmode by using the pwnhammer to break crates this will cause the next tiers of ores to spawn in your world. You can mine those, after that I would recommend then exploring the new corruption/crimson and hallow this can yield you with some nice drops, and materials for some nice spells. I also find that early on the snow biome can be a nice visit because killing the snow golems during a blizzard can be a very easy way to get wings, and there are some more useful dropped from enemies in the ice caverns. Its around this time as well that you can kill mimics for some more gear, at this point hopefully you have enough equipment to take on the mech bosses, you might need to build or expand your arena if you already have one itll make the fight go much easier. Once you get to this point it really becomes open ended, here I would start exploring some more especially in the Jungle itll have brand new life fruits and and chlorophyte ore. These are going to be major players in getting ready for end game. But if you want you should be able to take on the pirate invasion and solar eclipse for more gear. So now comes what I consider to be the hardest boss of the game Plantera you'll likely have to spend a while mining out sizable amounts of the jungle to get enough room to comfortably face Plantera and the fight is difficult. However once you beat Plantera you've got a few more choices, I would reccomend going to the dungeon and grinding the enemies there they will drop incredible loot. Or you could go straight to Golem he's not nearly as much of a difficulty jump as plantera and can pretty easily be handled with any fast fire rate weapon like the megashark. So all that you have left is the celestial event and the final boss, before this I highly recommend arming yourself with one of the post plantera armors there is Shroomite for rangers, beetle armor for warriors, and spectre armor for mages. Itll require a lot of chlorophyte and a couple other things that can be pretty easily found on the wiki. You can also fight Duke Fishron for stronger weapons and the Pumpkin/Frost Moons for the summoners final armor and more weapons. Well with that I think you should be ready to take on the celestial event, the only thing I reccomend is destroy your corresponding pillar first for access to the endgame weapons. Stardust for Summoners Nebula for mages Vortex for rangers, and solar for warriors. Of course there are other times where you will want to keep exploring and building that I didn't mention, but generally following this should help give a decent guide. I hope its not to terrible and that my spelling and grammar isn't atrocious, good luck.

I just realized I only described hardmode would you like advice for Normal mode as well?

you gotta kill all the bosses

For me now though, the short timeline from start to finish in vague detail:

  • Establish prison with 26-28 rooms from wood
  • Find nearest ice biome, loot the contents.
  • With iron/lead, make Reinforced Fishing pole
  • Wait for merchant to move in, buy Bug net
  • Destroy grass/stone mounds, catch worms with bug net
  • Use stars from nighttime to make enchanted nightcrawlers (stars+worms)
  • Go to ocean, catch Reaver Shark & Sawtooth Shark. Pick up Angler NPC
  • Do Angler Quests daily
  • Explore caves, sufficient life found. Use eye and beat Eye of Cthullu
  • Make Slime Crown from mining, Buy grenades from Demolitionist, use rope 28 high from ground. Throw Grenades on King Slime. Repeat until obtained slime hook/slime saddle
  • Make hellavator. Reach hell and farm hellstone. Mine obsidian on the way down in hellavator
  • Loot Hellforge from hell, return to base, make imp staff + hellstone armor
  • Head to corruption/crimson. Set up arena (if crimson). Defeat EoW/BoC
  • (Optional) head to jungle, find bee hive. Kill Queen bee
  • Head to dungeon, (same side as snow biome), Set up arena, kill Skeletron (night time)
  • Clear Dungeon
  • Gather potions, head to hell.
  • Wait for Demon to appear with doll. Obtain doll.
  • Build long bridge in hell to prepare for WoF.
  • Throw Doll in lava, summons boss
  • Defeat WoF, Hardmode begins.

To list everything from here to endgame would be tiring. If you get that far, I can draft up a small chart of what you could do.
