Another part of the solution would be breaking more demon altars, but that would also bring in the problem about Corruption/Crimson and Hallow, as there's a 2/3 chance that a random block will be corrupted/hallowed.
Alternatively, fish for crates. Skips the complete mining.
While fishing completely normally, with a fishing rod and bait, there is a small chance (improved with Crate Potions) that you are fishing for crates.
EDIT: The Sonar Potion tells you what you are currently fishing when the fishing pole is twitching.

You can fish in any lake, so long as that lake has a certain amount of liquid in it. Depending on which biome you are, you are capable of fishing different loot that is correlated to that specific biome.
