If you don't care about preciseness, you can craft the Drill Containment Unit, but it's pretty expensive: 40 Meteorite bars, 40 Hellstone bars, 40 Spectre bars, 40 Shroomite bars, 40 chlorophyte bars and 40 luminite bars (and you don't typically get more than 20-30 bars out of a single moonlord battle). The best prehardmode pickaxe is the hellstone pickaxe. It makes light as you swing it so as long as your'e mining, torches aren't so necessary. The pickaxe i use in hardmode is the Picksaw that drops from gollum. It double as an axe and a pickaxe so it's more convenient than one of the pickaxes made from fragments.
