Possible to purify the world?
Everything I read says to create hellivators or dig a ~6 block gap around anything I want to be safe and surround it with snow, clay or wood. But I have a world that I want to purify completely, no matter how much clentaminating I have to do. Is it even possible? Would I have to destroy all the demon altars as well, or do they not spread anything unless destroyed?

it's possible but extremely difficult, demon altars them selves do not count as corrupt tiles however they are usually on top of corrupted blocks. Also, every time a demon altar is a destroyed a random corruption/crimsom block is placed somewhere in your world (just one) so destroying them would be counter effective. Tiles that count towards the total corrupt count include ebonsand, ebonstone, corruption thorny bushes, purple ice blocks, and corrupt grass.

demon/crimson altars do not spready corruption/crimson, but destroying them has a 66% chance to randomly change a normal block to corruption/crimson or hallow. on my world i havent destroyed a single altar, dug around all the corruption and converted all corruption i found in my jungle to hallow, since corruption/crimson will spread through the jungle but hallow will not

Awesome. Thank you both! I fully understand that it is going to be an enourmous pain, but at least I know it can be done. I guess I know what I am going to be doing over the next few weeks haha.

Difficult? no. Time consuming? yes. Nothing difficult about it. Deafeating ML is probably more difficult.

Basically, you have to block off your original corruption/crimson. Easy. Dig a couple of 4 block wide hellevators around where the hallow/corruption/crimson V will spawn. You can make an educated guess looking at other people's worlds, wiki example[terraria.gamepedia.com]. Once hardmode starts, dig more holes and block off the new crimson/corruption/hallow. Then you can wait until you got enough money for the clentaminator and solution. Then just drop down the holes and clean everything. Easy and pie.

That's why you dig a bunch of holes before hardmode.
I have a separate solution which I've done in all my worlds:

1) Get Molten Armor and prepare to fight WOF
2) Grind QB for money (~30 gold a kill)
3) Buy a truckload of bombs and a truckload of rope (1000 bombs and 10 000 rope)
4) Find the borders of your Corruption/Crimson
5) Bomb the borders of them. If you encounter corrupted blocks, just move a little further away and keep bombing. This is where the rope comes in - rope is very easy to place en masse as you can click where rope is and it gets added to the bottom.
6) Get your hands on a Compass.
7) Create a world that has the same size as your world.
8) Kill WOF on that world. Immediately teleport home and find out, using the Compass, where the Hallow and Corruption/Crimson spawn.
9) Back on your old world, the one you care about, go to the locations on the Compass, where you now know the biomes will spawn (be generous with your safety - I usually like to add on 500 feet), and again bomb and rope to the bottom of the world.
10) Create an infinite water generator.
11) Glug a Crate Potion or about twenty, and fish up a bunch of crates.
12) Create an arena in the Ice Biome. This usually consists of solid walls to hide in, and a mob pit.
13) Wait for it to rain.
14) Kill WOF.
15) Whilst still raining, in Hardmode, kill enough Angry Nimbuses to get a Nimbus Rod.
16) Whilst still raining, head over to your Ice Biome arena.
17) Kill three Ice Golems. This is done by waiting for them to fall in the mob pit, and then hiding behind some blocks to block their lasers. Summon the Nimbus Rod over the mob pit.
18) With three Frost Cores in hand, and hopefully an Ice Feather, head back to base.
19) Turn Autosave off.
20) Save and exit.
21) Reload the world.
22) Open all crates by spam-right-clicking.
23) If you do not have enough ore to create a Mythril/Oriachulum Anvil, a Titanium/Adamantite Forge, and a full set of Frost Armor (which BTW can use both Titanium or Adamantite), and instead got lots of Tin (drop chance is the same), Alt+F4 to exit the world.
24) Go back to Step 21. Repeat until you have enough to fulfill your needs.
24a) If you really don't have enough, fish up a couple more crates.
25) With Frost Armor, which is in fact a better ranged armor than Hallowed, you now can take on the Mech bosses and everything with ease!

No destroying altars required. The original Corruption is contained, and the Hallow will not be able to spread.

One disadvantage of this method: No Pirate Invasions will ever spawn naturally. However, Pirate Maps will still drop at the usual 1/100 in the Ocean biome. However, I think the benefit of knowing exactly where all your Corruption is, and knowing it won't spread beyond the boundaries you set, outweigh the lack of Pirate Invasions.
