They are quite lategame. Many things cannot be acquired immediately or else they would break how the game's enemies get "harder over time," to make the game challenging.

Wings require a boss in the Underworld to be defeated before you can get your hands on any of them.

You can get wings from the npc witch doctor without killing bosses though if you already have him but you must build house for him in the jungle or make a jungle biome home for him. Hardmode only

you can get souls of flight from the wyvern and then kill a lot of harpies and get a giant harpies feather then craft harpy wings at mythrill anvil, this is in hardmode btw

Hardcore, the character option, is not the same as hardmode.

Hardmode is activated when you kill a boss in the Underworld.

One of the earliest obtainable sources of flight come from the Bee Mount, dropped by the Queen Bee. Riding the Bee Mount enables flight for 10 seconds

you need 10 feathers from a harpy, 20 souls of flight from wyverns(both mobs are from space, wyverns are after wall of flesh), and 25 souls of light (after WoF.)

all of which are from hard mode. besides harpys.

If you want to get wings, the easiest way is to create a house for your witch doctor in the jungle. Then you need to defeat the wall of flesh (sumon him by throwing a guide doll into lava in the underworld). Once the bose dead you will be able to buy them to the witch doctor for some good money. =)
