Reaver Shark
To specify, it does higher base damage, has a faster use time, better knockback and sells for more than the Molten Pickaxe.

I support the Reaver Shark - it's on par with Molten, I believe, and you can also get it by fishing in the ocean (you have a chance of 1:100 to get it with 50 fishing power). It's a good alternative for early starts. :)

Reaver shark. It can mine cobalt, and you can get it before even fighting the EoC, because all you really have to do is get a bug net, get some bait, make a reinforced ( or the crimson/corruption) fishing poles, andgo fishing.
