What blocks stop corruption/crimson spread exactly?
I can't seem to find a definite list anywhere, no matter where I look.

I'm trying to prepare for hard mode, so I need to know this to protect my base and glowing mushroom farm and whatnot.

I was thinking of building my barriers out of either boreal wood (which I built my bse out of, because I spawned right next to a snow biome) or smooth granite. But I can't find any mention anywhere as to whether or not these materials can stop spread or not. Its quite infuriating.

I do know of some materials that can stop spread (such as ordinary wood and gray brick), but I'm not sure if those work anymore. I tried to run a test using vicious powder, but that apparently doesn't spread crimson, it just removes hallow. I thought it did in the past?

Well it's not so much that some materials stop spread as that they just can't be corrupted; so it's easier to list the things that WON'T stop spread than those that will.
Corruptable blocks are:
Dirt
Stone
Sand and Sandstone
Ice (but not snow)
And mud - but that can only be corrupted and not hallowed.

Anything else is fair game. Granite, wood, even stone brick - any of these will work.

In addition to this, remember that the corruption and Hallow can jump three blocks to reach another block and continue spreading.

The best way to stop it could be to hammer the walls out at least 4 blocks wide from it, and then fill it in the ash, wood or bricks (I assume gray or grey bricks)

and remember that it can spread through walls so even if you make a barrier you would need to break the dirt walls

use 5 layers of stone brick.

No it doesn't.
It spreads up to 3 blocks away from a corrupted block. The walls just take on the look of the nearby brick with the highest priority.

Nothing will prevent a block from becoming corrupted. Chlorophyte ore does have some mud protecting properties, but dirt and stone will corrupt all the same.

The only solution is to place enough empty space between clean blocks and hallow/crimson/corrupted blocks.

This isnt true, Stone Bricks Prevents the issue.

I have been using clay and hay blocks to reign in the corruption. Clay especially as you don't have to gather it using a sickle and it's more plentiful/available just starting out. Those seem to keep the thorns from spreading.

I wonder if the back biome wall determines anything regarding how corruption spreads.

Also, necro-ing old threads that are very pertinent is not bad - it actually helps new players like me. Probably a candidate for a sticky considering it's a common question.
