Report a translation problem
The game expects to be played in softcore the first time around - and if you don't enjoy harsh penalties for mistakes I don't recommend medium or hardcore at all. They're just to give the game a more rogue-like element, offering different playstyles for different people!
And remember, you not enjoying the genre isn't the same as the game being bad! :P
Believe me, your issue is fairly minor in comparison to some of the potential issues. A worm raid on your home (I ended up building some crazy stuff in the vita version of the game) being a fun one in the semi-early game.
Probably the thing that irritates me the most is that you basically need the wiki up all the time until you have basically everything memorized, but updates exist so...
You don't need the wiki since guide tells you about every craftable item if you show him the materials.
