Ankh Shield, worth?

I'm now in an expert mage world, I just have beaten Skeletron Prime and miss The Twins, so I'm still in time.

Worth the time or nah?

I mean it is just a thorough pain to acquire. However it is a great item if you do. You can get lucky and get the ingredients early but chances are you wont until midlate game when it won't be as useful.

The key problem is with 11 ingredients, some of them quite rare drops you might just find it too grindy to bother with. I do recommend the obsidian shield even if you don't find the pieces for the ankh because the anti-knockback is worth it in some fights. (Though it is less important once you have your wings, etc.)

Its only useful before Golem.. if you somehow manage to obtain all required items, then great!

But usually on 80% of all playthroughs that get to hardmode i never make an Ankh shield. Usually its because the drops are hard to get or that an obsidian shield is all i need. but its more of the former.


Wings, Damage boosting item. Worm scarf or some other useful passive. (sometimes) Boots. and some kind of class-based item like Mechanical glove or Mana flower.

Besides the demon heart and 1 other item. thats usually how my accessories look. You can put the Ankh instead of the boots or in the 6th slot if you are playing expert (which you probably are)

But there are much better items then the ankh. as the ankh is only good before you kill Plantera. as the Spore Sack will usually make your travel easier letting you kill enemies before they have a chance to kill you

Boots are a relative term. Usually i mean frostspark boots but if you have a good mount then i use lava waders.

The 6th slot usually is reserved for an expert item or something else. Spore sack, Shield of cthulu, and Master Ninja Gear are items i think of.

Now I'm in the phase where I'm mining cloropythe, will do Plantera and start Spectre Armor. For now I have: Celestial Emblem, Obisidian Shield, Shield of Cthulhu, Worm Scarf, Wings and Frostspark Boots.

I have Sorcerer Emblem too but I prefer mobility. So I'll keep it like that untill I'll get Tabi's.

I never even use Cobalt Shield. It's a waste of a slot that I could put dmg or defense item.

I mean a fully warded obsidian shield IS a defense item lol. +6 if I recall. You're not going to find too many better than that. However it IS expensive to ward something and it might be better if you are good enough at dodging (something many of us aren't) to use a shark-tooth necklace or the like (w menacing) or a movement enhancer instead.

It gives defense but sucks as defensive item. You only need to dodge enough to not get comboed, which I found no enemies can do that except for Eater of Worlds, or in rare occasions when a dash fails.

Final battle set up looks like this:

Celestial Shell
Celestial Stone
Charm of Myths

Maybe you can squeeze in Ninja Gear somehow, but not really a shield.

yes but, like can't play without a dash, so i prefer to do that, even if it's better

You know what's really great about Terraria?

It is a game where there is no one *right* way to play. And a person could go hundreds or even thousands of hours in the game and still not experience everything there is to experience. (Such is the way of non-linear games) Because it accommodates all kinds of players from super casual to hc min-maxing munchkins with every strategy just perfectly timed/reasoned out.

Personally I did the final battle (a long time ago) with ankh shield, leaf wings, celestial shell, avenger emblem, frostspark boots and charm. For some reason I found the Scarf and SoC (along with most of the Expert mode only items) to be very dissatisfying at the time past a certain point. That said we are talking about whether a specific item is worth it and imho that's a subjecting question to answer ultimately. (How much IS your time worth to you, and how patient ARE you?)

well, i have patience, but i realized i dont need it, after plantera, game's basically free, so not worth now.
