meteorite shots for guns ( 1 meteorite bar + 70 musket balls)
An early hardmode Pirate Invasion is a pain regardless what you're playing, so don't think much of that.
well, considering that people tend to defeat most bosses they encounter with only the bullets from the endless bullet pouch/ arrow quiver, using meteor shots and unholy arrows doesn't sound that bad, meteor shots are even fitting for hardmode due to their damage and them being better than silver bullets.
also, AoE ammo is pretty usable agains't destroyer,
you should consider using crystal bullets, as they have a good multi-enemy effect, but rather than that, meteor shots and unholy arrows are the way to go. maybe you can go with holy arrows too, since the falling stars are actually area explosions and can hit hordes on places without a low ceiling.
star cannon can also shot multiple enemies by piercing while dealing good damage (52 default damage) and is one of the most powerful alternatives, but consider that the damage of it will be lower than most hardmode weapons loaded with unholy arrows/meteor shots, even with armor buff.
one of the best alternatives I have to suggest is using crystal darts, since they pierce up to 6 enemies and bounces aswell. oh, and also Cursed Darts! they can deal damage to a whole raid in events with its cursed fire trail, but not that useful agains't bosses, though. if you want to use darts agains't bosses, I'd go with ichor darts for sure.
rather than ammo, there are some weapons designed specially for Crownd Control:
Daedalus Stormbow: Controls crownd extremely well with explosive ammo, since it rains arrows down from the sky!
Hellwing Bow: turns arrows into flaming bats that pierces enemies, but has terrible precision.
that's pretty much all the ammo for crownd control for pre-mechanical bosses I know, hope it helps!
Edit: I decided to post the link of the official wiki pages for all the ammos and weapons I mentioned here so you can get a better understanding on how they work:

Apparently Meteor shot pierces enemies. Thought it only bounced.
