If you do have to make it in hardmode, put at least 50 meteorite ore in the center location of your planned arena. This will force all mobs that spawn to be meteor heads, which are much easier to deal with, and in some cases can just be taken care of with a pickaxe swinging while mining out the area. To make sure you have decent space coverage for the meteorite biome, just ~200 ore and space it out a bit.
As for tactics you essentially want to awaken the monster, then lead it to your arena and then start attacking around it. (Yo-yos seem to be the best choice here as you can center the yo-yo end on them and keep moving around.) You could also put a house above the arena for a spawn location and maybe a nurse station. If you are feeling extra ambitious you could make a dryad house too so that part of the time you are getting a boost to your stats and the boss takes some incidental damage. The downside to using meteorite is it will draw meteor heads to attack your npcs so maybe you remove the Meteor deposits (1 ore per section should do) when the arena is done and you're ready for plantera.
I recommend using a summon staff (imp is fine for this especially if you use bewitching station first) whilst building so that you don't have to take too many breaks just to keep yourself alive and out of danger.
