How many different classes for a healthy class salad?
I'm doing a modded playthrough and am wondering this, how many damage types and weapon types should I mix in? For example

Would a mage+yoyo'er+summoner be reasonable to balance damage types with accessories so that i can have a reasonable amount of minions, while also having good mana efficiency and enough yoyo range?

Would it be better to only mix together two classes? Thanks for any and all answers :)

For me i usually use 2 damage types. For example, there's no any penalty to use guns as offhand weapon as mage or summoner. Just know if you mixing something with summoner, try to avoid shooting the target of your minions, because your projectiles probably will fly through without any damage because of enemy invincibility frames. You also shoud try ice golem armor and forbidden armor in midgame. They're made specificly for mixed class gameplay.

(also I'm going to eventually have an extra accessory slot as this is an expert playthrough)

The point of multiplayer runs with a mix of classes is so folks aren't fighting over equipment. In Terraria, there aren't many incentives to have a mixed party like in RPGs. There aren't monsters with a resistance to only one type, or control skills limited to one class - it's purely based on what folks feel comfortable with.

For efficiencyès sake you could always have two players, each with a combination of two classes, and that would be all you need. Or you could go the other route and have as many as 12 different two-class combos, then give each of them to a player. I am not a fan of mixing and matching myself so I tend to stick with the four main classes plus the Thrower class.

The main problem you will eventually run into is invinciblity frames.

Bosses, even tough you cant really see it, have a very brief period after being attacked where they cannot be damaged again. Easiest way to notice this is to try to do a hybrid of summoner + anything, unless the weapon you are using is capable of piercing invincibility frames, your attacks will just phase trough the boss wihout doing any damage, now imagine this but with 5 or 6 people having 2 or 3 diffrent damage types each, unless you are fighting a worm boss, most of you will just stand there and play hot potato with the bosses agro while the summons take up 99% of bosses vurnebility frames. Stick to pure classes, that way everyone should at least get to do something.
