Every time I join my friends multiplayer game, I am eventually returned to the main menu with it just saying lost connection.

When this happens it usually means that either your wifi connection or your friends wifi connection isn't doing to good, or you guys are located far away like in different countries. There's not much you can do for this except for upgrade your internet. What I'd do is ask your friend to go to fast.com along with yourself. If you guys are getting a good connection you may have to reinstall Terraria as connection files may be corrupted (not uncommon) if that doesn't work your may hade to aswell. If this is the wrong answer or I miss interpreted your question or these don't work, tell me and we'll work to find a better solution!

Our internet is actually really solid so we don't know why it happens

Is the friends wifi solid?

yes

he has another friend on the server and they never randomly lose connection
Also check your antivirus. I know if AVG wants to update it will halt all Terraria traffic - fortunately AVG has a "temporarily turn off" function. Interestingly, I can turn it back on after having connected and Terraria multiplayer will run fine.

Aidenpons is correct this happened to me aswell because your computer is receiving tile (block) data constantly and that much could tigger your anti virus to cut off connections

I will see if that works thank you!
