Yes, and planter boxes are literally reskinned clay pots. I figured that'd be the fastest way to explain their functionality.

Yes. Use seeds for your chosen plant on the box, let it grow for a while, then break the plant with a pickaxe or rod of regrowth.

Crud. How can I get seeds fast cause I cant find any and I have been looking for 30 mins

Break the related plant when it blooms.

Daybloom: during the day
Moonglow: during the night
Shiverthorn: always once fully grown
Waterleaf: during rain
Fireblossom: during sunset, only when it's not raining
Deathweed: during a Blood Moon
