Because you need it to beat bosses.
Hallowed and Chlorophyte, for example, have pretty similar stats. Hallowed has slightly better Mana conservation and regen, Chlorophyte has slightly more damage and more crit.
Adamantite Armor is just a tiny bit weaker than Hallowed.
Titanium's damage stats are also similar to both of those sets, except it sacrifices a lot of Mana conservation (which you may not care about, if you're using a Mana Flower) for some invincibility time.
Honestly, all four of those are quite similar in power.
Since you beat a Mechanical boss, you also unlocked the Apprentice armor. It's a weird one... it doesn't do as well as the other sets of this tier damage and Mana-wise, but it lets you use three Sentries at once, improves your Minion and Sentry damage by 30%, improves one specific type of Sentry even more, and gives you a pretty good increase to movement speed too. Might be interesting to play with it if you can bother farming the extra Medals (instead of keeping them for the post-Golem items).
Five sets, no particular one standing out... yeah, progression is weird in this game.
Spectre will be a bigger upgrade. The base stats on it are actually worse than the other sets (roughly the same damage, worse Mana conservation/regen), so it's the set bonus that makes the difference; depending on enemy Defence, the set bonus alone could add a good 30% to your damage. The Mask anyway; the Hood absolutely cripples your offensive capabilities in exchange for some HP regen.
Next there's Dark Artist Armor. Very good, but still a hybridized Sorcerer/Summoner(Sentry) set. Valhalla Armor is also an option; you can still use Magic weapons with it because it's a non-class set.
And then... Nebula. Oh, Nebula.
You're gonna love Nebula.
