Very specific question about base building.
I have had this game for awhile but have been taking it really seriously as of late, i got myself to the point where i have full molten gear pre hardmode, i am planning to go into hardmode fairly soon, but i am paranoid that my wooden house will get destroyed, are there any types of blocks i should use to keep my house and npc's safe? Thanks.

The only way blocks can be destroyed are through Bombs, Dynamite, and the like. No matter what you make it of, NPCs cannot be protected from enemies that go through blocks, such as Wraith, a common night enemy, and the Mechanical Bosses. The only tile destroying explosives are used only by players or occasionally Dynamite traps.

Note that grenades and explosive bullets do not destroy blocks.

In order to keep your NPCs safe, I'd suggest you build an arena far away from them, where you will fight bosses and invasions.

Dlamica, why would you unfriend me? :|
Enemies can't destory blocks. Only enemy that could do that was the clown but his ability to do so was removed a while ago. Don't worry about a damn thing about your base getting destoyed but enemies. Just be careful about enemies thst can pass through walls though like wraiths.

This is not exactly what you're asking, but i think it might help.

Although the blocks themselves will not be destroyed, they will get contaminated by hollow and crimson/corrupt whilst they spread.

So assuming your "base" means the NPC houses and one or two plant gardens or artificial biomes like a above ground glowing mushroom area, to "protect" it from hardmode contamination is;

a) Dig a 5 block wide hole around the area, including the both sides and up and down. This alone should work but because hardmode contamination biomes grow crystals that can extend for 3-4 blocks which means they can contaminate without touch. There may be areas where this isnt applicable so the next one fixes that.

b) for safety outline border areas with Gray Brick. This is the contamination immune block I know of. I think glass works too but this only uses stone to produce so I prefer this. I think your original question refered to this but you didnt know what exatly it protected you from.

Good luck, it really isnt hard because you are not in expert, just different enemies and biomes.

you could always use the green blocks from the dungeon as they are bomb proof. at lease this way u dont use a bomb on actecide and destory a part of your house. worse thing that will happen is u destory the chari and wall
I have Blue bricks in my Dungeon, i assume its the same thing just a different colour>? Thanks for the comment.

Corruption and crimson can spread over a gap of up to 3-4 blocks with the thorns, so I would advice you to make a 4 wide hole to hell and fill it with something like glass, wood, stone bricks
Walker Nov 29, 2017 @ 4:51am
1. No, you dont need to dig all the way down to hell. I am assuming you built your house on the middle of the map where you started. Just dig 5 blocks wide on the Left and Right where your houses end. You probably dont have anything Up. On the bottom just dig 5 blocks high tunnel from all the way from left to right. SO its like a picture frame with no top.

2. There are 2 biomes that spread. Corruption or Crimson is the one you already have before hard mode. And hollow is the new one. The problem is if they come and contaminate your starting area, it stops being jungle and instead becomes a new biome so enemy spawns, what plants grow, visual look and background also changes. To keep thing the same we isolate them with this method.

Actually it doesnt solve the problem, even if yer house is in the sky, corruption/crimson is still a thing and it will take over the jungle
