Distance from NPC home that monsters will spawn

So what is the distance from a NPC "home" that monsters will spawn. I was thinking of creating a base in the sky containing NPCs and a base on the ground that does everything else so I can farm items and keep them away from anything stupid that I do. How high off the ground or away from everything do i have to have the NPCs home to get monsters to spawn?

As long as you make it so nothing can jump into your house, it could literally just be like 12 blocks or so off the ground. Enemies cannot spawn behind any man-placed wall. I recommend around 30-40 blocks (80 feet) off of the closest structure/ground.

at 100% zoom monsters will not spawn if 4 npcs are visisble on screen where the monster would spawn(not counting critters and other non-hostiles), i'm pretty sure.

so as long as it's 40 blocks off the ground I should be good for underneath it to lay down monster farms?

unless you use statue spawning mechanisms, they work where ever.

why would that effect the area spawns?
