Why do people use Large maps?
Getting around takes 3x as long.
You dont get more resources. The only resources you get more of are dirt, stone, sand and mud. You couldnt even find all the gold ore in a small map.
Once you hit Hardmode all the stuff you would find in chests is irrelevant so chests dont matter.

Why?

More resources. Large Worlds have more resources that Small ones, and they provide a lot more area for builders to work with.

Ive hosted multiple sessions with 10+ people, space was never a problem. And I already addressed the resource thing so

10+ people on a small world?

I don't know about you, but to me bigger = better. (at least in this case) I suppose it boils down to personal preference. Larger worlds simply have more room to have bigger and more things. If I needed a rare item, I'd typically startup a large world and try to get it, because of the bigger chance. In my own view:
  • Small - 1-2 players
  • Medium - 3-6 players
  • Large - 6+
And the reason why is because I tend to take my time, and all my playthroughs are slow. Per player, tons of resources are eaten to fully support each and every player, and that could only be achieved by using a bigger world.

You can't give everyone in a 10-player party an Ankh Sheild on a small map. There simply won't be enough Cobalt Sheilds to support them all.
But you could fish them up

yes, you could, but many (like me) are lazy and would rather explore for loot than fish for it.

More floating islands for more loot, more dungeon, takes longer for Corrupt/Crimson/Hallow to swallow the world whole while I'm lazily farming souls or some ♥♥♥♥

Well then I guess its a difference of personality. I play terraria to smash through the game. I dont spend hours collecting/building. Most ores are useless, just need enough for one set of armor sometimes then you move on. Ive never run into the "not enough" thing even with 8-12 players on my server.
And yeah I despise normal. Having that extra accessory slot is the bomb.

Small worlds are better for playing through the game due to progression being faster. Large worlds have more life crystals and ore for more players. I use small worlds a majority of the time, but large worlds are really good for chill runs rather than getting through the game super fast. Medium worlds are good because they are almost always have 3 sword shrines.
