Stupidly high spawn rates at all times?

Just started a new expert mode run. Aside from extremely bad luck with chest spawns (closest chests to spawn are in further 3rds of the world) the enemy spawn rates are as high as during a blood moon! Any idea what's happening?

Screenshot : Zombies spawn before I can defeat them. Ended up dying! To generic zombies!

Nah, I think that's normal. Also the screenshot is wayyy too dark.

The screenshot's not good enough, as I took it while moving so left side is clear, there is usually about as much mobs coming from the other side. Imagine going into crimson and being greeted by 8 blood crawlers right off the bat.

dang dude. thats too many spawns. 10 on a surface forest at night?! did u lure some from almost off screen?

My guess is that there is no caves nearby, forcing spawns on top

I've played expert mode before and don't remember it altering spawn rates at all
