question about star cannon

the wiki says its the top DPS weapon pre-hardmode and a very good weapon to mid-game hardmode. Im thinking about making one, but... what about its ammo?
i assume it fires stars, but i cant buy ot craft stars, only pick random drops, does the gun needs stars to fire? what is the best way to get ammo for the star cannon?

Honestly, it's easier just to use the Spacegun and Meteor Armor. Infinite ammo, high firerate, decent damage, and it pierces. People use it to take down the WoF, so it seems good to me.

If ur a scrub like me or just so lazy that you dont feel like actually having to put in effort to kill the wall of flesh then the best way to get ammo for the star cannon is to make a small world and build a row of blocks on top with a minecart track with bouncy ends and just afk

It requires fallen stars for ammo. Unfortunately, the only way you can find them is by collecting them off the ground at night. It's a good idea to just use it for special occasions like invasions and bosses.
