Crafting Question

I have Googled this but I am still in the dark. Apparently I don't have to have crafting materials in my inventory in order to have them in crafting. They just have to be in an open chest, within a certain distance of the crafting station.

If that is true, how do I leave a chest open whilst using a crafting station, and what is the maximum distance the chest can be from the station?

Just have them open and be near a station. I think it's around 10 blocks but I cannot remember.

You cannot open a crafting station, meaning you can operate a chest whilst still using the station, The chest can be any distance away from it as long as you are close to the crafting station. Example: If you were at maximum distance that you can be to open a chest that's on the left, Whilst close enough to a crafting station to the right, you can use the items in it, like 10 iron bars to create chains at a anvil.

You can use a piggybank from the pirate captain to move your items to the crafting station you want then you need to summon it and right click it near the crafting station.
be sure to put your items in the piggybank first :/

Piggy banks are sold by the merchant.

What??? The piggy bank is from the Merchant, Not the pirate. Also, Chests work as well.

If you have a chest open, its contents are treated as though they were in your inventory, for crafting purposes. From that point, you just need to be standing next to the necessary crafting station, and you can craft the items.

For this reason, I generally put the chests containing ores next to my furnace, those containing metal bars next to an anvil, those with wood next to a sawmill and work bench, etc. for convenient crafting.
