Super Absorbant Sponge from the Angler Quests is a good option. You could also drain it all into the Underworld, or pump it somewhere else with wire, etc.

If you're having trouble getting the absorbent sponge from quests, the best method, you could try digging a hole sideways until you find another cave and let it flood into there.

does the Super Absorbant Sponge require hardmode?

Drain it into a nearby cave, most caves don't lead all the way into the underworld. Meaning it will fill the neighboring cave and then you can proceed to dig a hellevator.

Uhh... If the water is in the Underworld, it should just evaporate. Try updating the blocks, just dig a few blocks around the water.

The S.A.S. should not be locked to hardmode, I'm pretty sure you just need to do a bunch of quests.

EDIT: Apologies, I forgot. Taken from wiki: It is awarded randomly by the Angler for completing fishing quests (1/70 chance after 10th quest in Hardmode).
Sorry for the misinformation.

Sorry, thought you meant part way down the hellevator. So, if it's already in hell I think it should eventually fix itself. If not, sponge seems like the only solution.

Dig a hole in the bottom, about 7 or 8 down, put a chest in it and put an item in the chest. From the chest, dig left or right 3+ blocks, dig up but not enough to hit water (hitting lava is fine). In the air pocket, dump some lava, mine up the obsidian. Obsidian shouldn't break the chest (since it has an item) so it she destroy the water/lava on the chest. Slow process and takes a bit of lava, but should force evaporation if the game won't do it automatically. Not sure if this still works, though.

I've had this problem before. Save and exit the world, then rjeoin it. Doing so will reset everything, which should get the water evaporation back up and running. Or it'll outright remove the water entirely.
