Edit: That is often what I do, I set up like 20 houses, and then delve into caves and such.
However, when you get the materials/will, it is really nice to have good looking houses. Wood boxes are bland. Make some different shapes, add decoration, scenery, whatever you want.
Creativity lets you have a lot more fun in this game than you might otherwise have.
(There is a reason I have 1400+ hours, is all I'm saying. It can be fun.)
