First home built, nobody moving in.
Hey guys,

Sorry for the extreme newbie question but I can't seem to get an NPC to move into the house that I built.

I made it exactly what it said to do in the Wiki. 6 blocks high, 10 blocks wide, wood walls, chair, torch and a table. Still not working. I can't get any NPC to move into the houses that I build.

Please help me :(

Which NPC are you trying to have move in?

The very first one when the game starts. I forgot his name. He's the npc that you can ask for help.

The guide?

Did another NPC already spawn? He spawns whenever a house is built for each NPCs whose requirements are currently fulfilled. Do you have at least 50 silver coins/used a heart crystal/killed a boss/etc?

Nope no other npc spawned and no coins aquired. And no boss killed and no heart crystal.

It's weird because on the console and smart phone version of this game, the guide moves right into the first house you build. His portrait pops up in the house too.

So it looks like the PC version is a little different.

We need a screenshot.

in the little terraria sidebar there is alittle house that you can click on, click that, then look for the question mark. click that, then click inside your house, it will say whats wrong. It sounds like you either, didnt add a "door" of some type or you didnt make the building solid.

Make sure the walls aren't mud. Mud walls don't count unless you take them down and put up self made mud walls. It also needs a door, chair, and table to count as a house.

"door" 3 platforms count :)

Yeah, and trapdoors.
Anything they can get through.

It's not. The housing system is the exact same on all platforms.
The only difference is that in order to see the NPC portraits on the PC version, you have to open your inventory and click on the house icon above your armor & accessories slots. This will display the housing overlay.

You shouldn't have to do this since the game does it automatically, but you can click on the Guide's portrait, then click on the house to assign him there. If you can't assign him to the house, then it's not valid.
You can click on the question mark icon, then on the house to see what's wrong with it.
try:
-making it slightly bigger
-making sure you fill in all parts of the wall, even 1 small area uncovered will make the area unsuitable
-try adding a second chair because it looks a little better
-maybe you aren't meeting the door requirements or its not bright enough (it affects it too)
also
-make sure where you're building it is suitable (they won't move in if its in space, and you'll have difficuilty building in the crimson/corrupt as well as hell)

False, It's possible to have a missing wall or two and they can move in still.

It also needs a torch = =
just check if that house is valid(only 7x9 block with wall and 1 chair, 1 table, 1 torch)
