Example: fill all the corridors around you (I'm not sure about the numbers, how far can enemies spawn) with blocks so enemies can't spawn there, mine a hole a few blocks wide, make a platform, then dig a bit bigger room below you that you can't see the floor of it, so enemies can spawn there. I know I described it a bit horribly, but I think there are guides in the Internet how you can make a good dungeon farm. Because the problem with your farming strategy might be that the snipers you were looking for were spawning in the corridors somewhere else, and they were despawning then because you were moving somewhere else or they just walked out.
