Only events you can 'cancel' are Solar Eclipse, Frost Moon, Pumpkin Moon, and anything else that requires a specific time frame. Just use an enchanted sundial. Though, that's a once every 7 days thing.

No, the invasion events cannot be stopped until you complete them.

Every "Moon" event (except from the end-game chain of events) can be stopped when the time changes to day or night (depends on the event).
