it'll make many other games you play better too.
i'd recommend practicing a little bit to get a feel for it - when you hold the left arrow, the boat will turn (slowly) from it's current direction to face left. it might turn clockwise or counterclockwise depending on which way will reach left faster. it's not tank controls like some other games. you generally want to hold the direction you want to go - and try not to turn 180 really quickly.
you can also break / let go of acceleration to get around corners more precisely
in case you feel like tank-controls would make more sense to you, you can try them with a cheat:
type: "cheatsplz" to turn on cheats then "boatplz" to toggle tank controls
