A Short Hike
horrible controls
I need to get a rant, or a scream off my chest here.

This is a lovely game, but it does not help at all I can barely control the little monster of a character, let alone pan the camera around to see where I am going, especially in regards to trying to fly to golden leaf.

This is the opposite of what a game is supposed to do, instead of fun, I've driven myself to motion sickness and being really upset with the game itself.

Forget accessible to those with difficulties, it's barely accessible to those of us without them.

There's also a good reason you can't fully pan the camera but even with the set camera it shouldn't be that bad of a struggle to play.

I didn't even know you could pan the camera and never thought it necesary. Maybe it will make it easier if you just forget that that option exists?

It has a semi pan option if anything, but I gave up in it after trying to actually use it.

It would be immensly helpful if it were remotely useful at all.

That might help a lot actually, thank you for pointing it out, I will give it a shot.

Hey, really sorry you're struggling with the controls.

The game should support most controllers, so perhaps plugging in one of those should help.

If the pixelated graphics give you motion sickness, it might help to turn the effect down (or off) in the graphics options.

Also, I was curious: did you remap the controls to WASD + Space by any chance? The mouse-based camera movement is more of an easter egg, you're not really supposed to use it during gameplay (it's also designed for controllers). I think trying out the default configuration of Arrow Keys + ZXC might work better.

It would help if you can switch the controls, that when I press forward the char runs where it looks, not north (like the old GTA/GTA2 style). Can't play it like this and the rotating world makes it worse (playing with keybord).

1) I'm not a guy.
2) You know nothing about me.
3) These controls are NOT disability friendly, as prior stated, and they're barely usable for precision control even with all my fingers!

Now kindly go play in a crowd without a mask on and stop assuming you know me.

uh dk if it's just me but controls are fine? if you havent already, rebind your keys to WASD + space + Z/any other key to make things easy. someone suggested arrow keys + ZXC but i personally wouldnt use that

I'm struggling with the controls too. Are you also playing on PC? I'm used to using WASD for movement but I can't find an option to change it and trying to balance on terrains/bridges and gliding is too difficult but I'm newer to online games so that'll play a big part too. If you want a sort of hiking game that's more PC friendly, I'd recommend TOEM if you haven't already played it.

@silhouette Fleur
I feel your pain. I walk and fly like a drunken strawberry. The controls are pretty bad in this game. That, combined with an infuriatingly bad camera makes navigating this world a chore. I finished the game after 1h15m (reached the top) and no longer want to continue because of the usability : no map, bad camera, wonky controls, and no achievements on EGS(?).

@developers:
I absolutely loved the premise and graphics and relaxed style of this game. Hopefully you will improve accessibility/usability for A short hike 2.

I am so glad to see I'm not the only one who found the controls of this game utterly infuriating. I get that not having mouselook might have been a deliberate design decision, but having a camera that can't be controlled by the player combined with the wonky control scheme where every arrow is relative to the current camera position instead of the direction the character is facing means that you constantly end up running, flying or swimming in the wrong direction because the camera moved and now the direction you were going before is a different direction. It's really disorienting and takes away from enjoying the game as a relaxing walking sim. The game is still cute and I gave it a thumbs up, but I really hope the developer considers a more modern control scheme in future games.
