your colonists will slowly do their research.. either wandering around "thinking" about it, interviewing workers, etc... when they have aquired enough data, they will sit at the desk and write a book for that tech... (requires enough paper in stockpile)
also need a bookshelf that is empty to store the book after they write it.
(yeah gonna need a HUGE library)
it is definitely a longer timesink to get the research completed.. but i can see where the devs are trying to make the system a lil more robust than simply a fire and forget thing.
from what ive seen in the tech tree, the artifact anaylzer work station needs power to run? ...i havnt made it that far yet ;o)
The artifacts are what is bothering me, it could just be a case of needing to shuffle some items around the tree, especially since there are already dependencies across rows
over time you can increase rep with a faction.. then when you can tank that rep with a "bad trade" for them and get some high value items...
main thing is its going to be a timesink to get your faction rep high enough
