Embark
Research System.
Hi Everyone,
I have not played Embark,in over a year and am a bit confused about the "new" (to me) research system. Could someone explain what is meant by a FREE research desk being needed to complete a research item.Does that mean if i complete a research 100% i have to construct another desk to complete the next item of research ,also if a research subject is in say 2 parts do i need 2 desks ? . It also seems to me that this system really slows the game down, but i could be wrong about that. It also looks a tad bizarre, when i am constructing soil walls, but building sets of bookcases that the British National Library would be proud of, (: any advice would be much appreciated.

i am also interested in knowing, at the moment i am stuck on "artifacts" i got plenty artifact, research center, artifact analyzer station, and ofcourse book shelves but they still dont complete the researches that require artifacts. For now i used the debug tool to unlock the research. But i am still wandering if this is a bug or a feature i am missing.

you need a free desk... meaning a research desk available for use.
your colonists will slowly do their research.. either wandering around "thinking" about it, interviewing workers, etc... when they have aquired enough data, they will sit at the desk and write a book for that tech... (requires enough paper in stockpile)

also need a bookshelf that is empty to store the book after they write it.
(yeah gonna need a HUGE library)

it is definitely a longer timesink to get the research completed.. but i can see where the devs are trying to make the system a lil more robust than simply a fire and forget thing.

from what ive seen in the tech tree, the artifact anaylzer work station needs power to run? ...i havnt made it that far yet ;o)

Sometimes the research will just bug out, when it happens i just save the game, exit embark then re-execute embark then upload the game and it work.

As far as bookcases are concerned, if they could store a few books it would be an improvement, I usually have a couple bookcases in each house, plus some sort of central library.

The artifacts are what is bothering me, it could just be a case of needing to shuffle some items around the tree, especially since there are already dependencies across rows

bookcases aren't an issue, by the time you need artifacts though you only have like a 25% chance of making a windmill. Got one made and only got 4 power out of it..need 5 for the analyzer. I'm on attempt 10 of the second one.

I'm also having trouble here. I haven't found a single artifact. none on the ground that I've seen, and the find item tool isn't helping. I've only seen a few in trade windows. but that brings up the issue of everything from the other parties side of the trade having Double Value. and all the artifacts even the shoddy ones, are diamond and have a normal value of over 1,000. meaning it coasts me over 2k or 3k. I can't make anything near valueble enough to trade.

I can't make anything near valueble enough to trade.

over time you can increase rep with a faction.. then when you can tank that rep with a "bad trade" for them and get some high value items...

main thing is its going to be a timesink to get your faction rep high enough

Cut gems have a very high Value:weight ratio, its what I end up trading for high value items; I also use food to quickly raise rep, most factions I can get max rep/trade just giving them simple meals

I have found that mittens can weigh 1 and be worth upper 100's. very good weight to worth ratio
