For me, i had to uninstall the game because I had a CD version. One I uninstalled it and bought a new game with steam it worked. Hope this might help. Dont just delete the files. Uninstall it with Microsoft add or remove programs.

I bought 3 copies of the game for me and my boys and we are all experiencing this issue and on an existing copy that I hadn't tried to play online with yet.

What worked for my friend is making an account on my game and then logging in to that account on his side.

Update: We have addressed the issue for *new* purchases of a game key as of this morning. For those of you still affected by the issue (between Wednesday and today), we are continuing to work towards a solution that provides you with access to the game. I will continue to follow up with updates and information as it becomes available.

Update: If you are still experiencing this issue, please follow these steps:

1. Exit Steam completely (ensure you are totally signed out).
2. Sign back in to Steam.
3. Launch the game.

Ideally, you should receive a fresh key once you sign out of your account entirely and re-launch the game. If you do not receive a key, it may be that you've only closed the window, and have not signed out completely.

Whether this solves the problem or if you continue having trouble accessing the game, please let us know and we'll follow up with our team!

I followed the steps, reinstalled, restarted, and I still have the bad cd key error.

Same here, still getting bad cd key error when trying to step up an account for online.

Hi Aleph Omicron ,
I received AOE 3 complete edition from a friend on Steam and when I went to create the account I gave the error [100] Bad cd key, however I received a key in the steam (i dont speak english)

I actually have another problem, to open the game it saids that I must insert key, but my cuestion is, what key? I mean, i don't recived any messeges with the code, so I don't know what to do. I need help plz
