You can use LAN or ESO. ESO is the official online platform for online games. You can reach it ingame.

ESO should just work. Otherwise there is something wrong on your side. You can also use GameRanger, then you still play on LAN connection.

Make sure your IP in game are the same as your Tunngle IP or whatever. When you host a game through LAN it should say at the top what it has set your IP to. If ths is different to your Tunngle, etc. IP then go into Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3\Startup and type into user.cfg OverrideAddress="your Tunngle IP" If this file does not exist then open notepad and typee in the same thing. Save it as user.cfg and there should be an option saying "save as type" change this to all files and it should work.

I'm not sure if this is the only thing you need to do for it to work, but it was what did it for me. I also found that although my IP was already the same it allowed my friend tto connect to me so it might be worthwile doing it just incase even if your IP is the right one.

If it doesn't work then you need to forward ports and make sure your firewall isn't blocking anything.

sorry, i meant make sure your firewall isn't blocking it on your computer or your friends, you will also have to make sure that your friend has made sure their IP is correct too.
