- Navigated to install directory - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age Of Empires 3\bin
- Located age3y.exe
- Right click file > Properties > Compatibility tab
- Choose Windows Vista SP2 and Run as Administrator
- Relaunched, got two UAC messages(normal).. and it didn't crash
- Saw the Home City screen.
Hope this helps.
- Windows 10 was an upgrade from windows 7 (all 64-bit)
- .NET Framework and Directplay where already features that where carried over during the upgrade… therefore I never experienced issues them.
In short, my SSD failed. I purchased a new SSD and got Windows 10 64-bit home on a USB stick, and I installed the OS and now have a fresh Win 10 machine
I Install steam > install Age of Empires 3 complete like normal > Launch game:
- First it tells me to install .NET Framework 3.5… ok… I install it (no problems)
- Second it says I need to install Directplay… ok… I install it (no problems)
- Then It errors out, which is understandable cuz I had a bunch of stuff missing.. i.e. .NET and Directplay.
So I launch it again and get this error:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Initialization failed
Direct3D initialization failed. Possible Causes:
Old or corrupted graphics driver.
Direct3D improperly installed
Hardware acceleration disabled
Starting the application with the workstation locked.
Please check the log file for more information.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I click OK. (Press enter, cuz I can’t see my mouse)
- So now I follow my first post steps to see if this does anything…
- First I noticed it was already set for compatibility for XP/SP3 and Run as Admin, So I’d advise setting them for you.
- I do want to note that if I was to change these settings and launch it would just error out and revert back to WinXP/SP3 and Runas Admin settings.
- I’m like, well I can’t keep the changes so I’ll just leave ‘em
- I do a verify integrity check on AoE3 in steam.. 1 file failed… ok fine.
I decide to do a restart PC cuz I changed some stuff i.e. installed .NET and Directplay
I log back in > launch Steam > Launch AoE3.. with no errors… and played a skirmish game to be sure… i was expected it to error out TBH.
I don’t know if this helped anyone… it’s just what is happening on my computer that allows it to play.
so i tried this: went to the steamfolder and looked for the .exe data
then right click and fix kompablityproblems which solved it for me
(windows 10 64bit btw)
and then it just started the install screen
I was that same problem. I called to microsoft. I have windows 10 64bit. You must download https://www.microsoft.com/pl-pl/software-download/windows10 media creation tool / download tool and upgrade yours system. This operation fix it your problem. This help me and i can play in age.
I'm not sure if the above works for AOEIII steam edition, but I hope it helps someone. It seems to work for me.
