Age of Empires III doesn't run on Win10 x64?
When I try to install the game from my original CD, it says 'This app can't run on your PC // To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher.' https://goo.gl/CgZu7K

I had no problem with running this game on my previous OS Win8.1 x64. My PC's HW good enough and compatible with the game.

I even tried every possible 'Compatibility mode' and run the autorun.exe as an administrator, but I had no luck with that. As I press the 'Install' bottom, I got the error message.

Do you have any idea what might be going on?

Problem solved.
how did you solve it?
I have Windows 10 x64... This is how i got the game to launch:

- Navigated to install directory - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age Of Empires 3\bin
- Located age3y.exe
- Right click file > Properties > Compatibility tab
- Choose Windows Vista SP2 and Run as Administrator
- Relaunched, got two UAC messages(normal).. and it didn't crash
- Saw the Home City screen.

Hope this helps.

this didnt work as it is stuck on windows 8?? any ideas?
I have done the above steps(Compatibility for windows vista SP 2 & adnmin) .I did enable direct play in control panel. After a restart it still said not responding. I have a retail and a steam version of the game. the steam version installed but can not run. The retail opens autorun.exe and if i click install it goes to the installer saying "Preparing to install." and then just closes. It never installs. I run Windows 10 64-bit. Any help?

On my previous comment, a few things I’d like to note:
- Windows 10 was an upgrade from windows 7 (all 64-bit)
- .NET Framework and Directplay where already features that where carried over during the upgrade… therefore I never experienced issues them.

In short, my SSD failed. I purchased a new SSD and got Windows 10 64-bit home on a USB stick, and I installed the OS and now have a fresh Win 10 machine

I Install steam > install Age of Empires 3 complete like normal > Launch game:

- First it tells me to install .NET Framework 3.5… ok… I install it (no problems)
- Second it says I need to install Directplay… ok… I install it (no problems)
- Then It errors out, which is understandable cuz I had a bunch of stuff missing.. i.e. .NET and Directplay.

So I launch it again and get this error:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Initialization failed
Direct3D initialization failed. Possible Causes:
Old or corrupted graphics driver.
Direct3D improperly installed
Hardware acceleration disabled
Starting the application with the workstation locked.

Please check the log file for more information.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I click OK. (Press enter, cuz I can’t see my mouse)
- So now I follow my first post steps to see if this does anything…
- First I noticed it was already set for compatibility for XP/SP3 and Run as Admin, So I’d advise setting them for you.
- I do want to note that if I was to change these settings and launch it would just error out and revert back to WinXP/SP3 and Runas Admin settings.
- I’m like, well I can’t keep the changes so I’ll just leave ‘em
- I do a verify integrity check on AoE3 in steam.. 1 file failed… ok fine.

I decide to do a restart PC cuz I changed some stuff i.e. installed .NET and Directplay

I log back in > launch Steam > Launch AoE3.. with no errors… and played a skirmish game to be sure… i was expected it to error out TBH.

I don’t know if this helped anyone… it’s just what is happening on my computer that allows it to play.

Reviving old thread, but found something that might help while trying to get my old retail copy to work. Activate DirectPlay (Here's how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XYyGB-Tn3g ), run as admin, run under compatibility for Windows Vista Service Pack 2, and insure you have DEP either off or allow all .exes and launchers of AOEIII to run without it. Here's how: http://resources.infosecinstitute.com/windows-memory-protection-mechanisms/

I'm not sure if the above works for AOEIII steam edition, but I hope it helps someone. It seems to work for me.
@previous: Safe to say it should work for launchers and installers too.
