Here is a solution which worked for me (I found it in another thread):
- Right-click aoe3y.exe and select the "Compatibility" tab.
- Start the compatibility solution process (don't change any compatibility options directly).
- When it asks you to do a test run with the compatibility options this process has found, let it do it. This worked for me.
- Finally tell the process to save the new options.
- From now on, start AoE3 either directly from the aoe3y.exe or from a link to aoe3y.exe on your desktop (or wherever you want it to be). Important: Don't ever start AoE3 from within Steam or using the launcher or one of the other AoE3 exe's! This will damage the settings for aoe3y.exe, and you have to repeat the compatibility process above.
- Observe that aoe3y.exe (which starts Asian Dynasties) gives you access to all 3 campaigns, as yoqpasa noted in the second post of this thread. So you won't have to use anything else but aoe3y.exe, if you want to play AoE3.
Two remarks:
- Apparently, the MSXML 4 message for the first expansion is wrong - otherwise I couldn't play Warchiefs using aoe3y.exe (with a caveat: Until now, I have only played the first scenario of Warchiefs for a minute or so).
- What exactly the compatibility process of Win10 changes, I don't know. All I see is that it ticks Vista SP2 compatibility, but I'm sure it does something else, too: If I tick Vista SP2 compatibility myself, without using the compatibility process, then I get the MSXML 4 message, and aoe3y.exe abends.
Very, very odd!
Tried changing settings for all users to use compatibility mode "Windows XP SP 2" and set it to run as Administrator, also tried running Steam as Administrator but the AoE3.exe and the launcher don't open the game, they just crash.
Though the main game campaign can be played through running The Asian Dynasties, I want to play multiplayer with some friends who only have AoE3 and not the expansions.
Edit : Just noticed that each time the base game tries to do the 'first time setup' and crashes before it completes, I think at step 1.

That worked
Thanks for the link. I would like to confirm that installing MSXML does solve the problem I described above.
Moreover, I would also like to correct an error in my earlier post: Asian Dynasties does NOT contain all AoE3 campaigns. It does contain the WarChiefs campaigns, but not the campaign of the base game (something like "The Falcon landed on Malta" or so).
Thus installing MSXML does provide a benefit beyond the Asian Dynasties.
I guess he means this: right click on game icon> run as administrator
You seem to know what your doing. Expansions will run but not the main game.
I installed the msi and restarted but the main game still wont start.
Comes up with this error message: "Age of Empires 3 has stopped working".
