I just can't fix the "Failed to join" error.
I keep getting the "failed to join" error that everyone else always gets. I've tried opening up ports 2300-2310 UDP and TCP, I have no firewall, avast! is off, everything. I don't know where else to turn, or what else to do. I bought it solely to play with real people rather than compstomp my whole life.

this is the only solution (host the game, yourself and wait 1 or 2 minutes)

use a title related to the type of game 2v2 treaty 40 or 2v2 rush etc. they will join you fast

i have the same problem too. it works nicely on my windows xp pc. but on my windows 7 and 8 i get this all the time and thats the only way i can play vs real players..

there is no fix for us but!

to face real people follow the steps above. host the type of game your want to play

known errors that has happened to me and the way i solved them
if a player tries to join and he/she keeps getting kicked out, refresh the slot by replacing with a npc/npc off/npc/npc off that clear it.

if a friend can't join you after he has had 1 game tell the player to restart the game only after you refreshed the slot.

if a player can't green up tell the player to restart the whole game it self not just log out!!only fix

errors with no fix
start game with no home city. good luck you just lost the game#

can't make town center of treaty 40 error. if you place town center location and try to stop it before it starts at the begining. this error will come up. sorry mate you just kicked yourself out of treaty as you can't make anything for 40 minutes

cya good luck!!

found easy way now. no need for port forwarding. (and port sometimes will not work)

-first check fire wall. you will see everything on aoe should be allowed if not enble it!

-find aoe3 game folder under bin, count the applications and look at the names (should be 5)

, go back to your firewall . it should show only 3/5 files. missing too

the fix is simple log in as admin and add the remaining 2 files to your fire wall. making it 5/5 files.

don't know why the firewall do not pick up those files automatically. but the game works perfectly after this is done. if it is still not reading do the same to windows firewall

trial and error by my brother picked this up. lucky!!

What are the 2 other files? Please tell me! :)

just make sure to go to that bin folder and add all application(exe), to the firewall and allow access (there is 5) on that folder. the firewall tends to pick up 3 and the game seems to be dodgy online without the other 2. so just look at the end extentions of the files.

good luck. sorry mate i can't help any further than that at the moment as i am very busy

Thank you, dude. Hope you get "un"-busy! :D

What is the "solution"? :D

I believe I simply restarted my router after purchasing the game. I might have allowed something in the NAT.

I once had this problem a long time ago, and fixed it by chance when I changed my router. It is entirely a network problem from the user's end.

Hey!
First of all sorry to bump this again but I just want to say that I discovered the problem with this situation.
The problem is something about port fowarding that doesn't work properly and the only solution that I found is activating DMZ.
I have a Thomson TG784 and I don't know if is the same procedure but here we go:

1. Go router settings, login, etc.
2. Select "Home Network"
3. Select "Devices"
4. Click on your pc that you are going to play AoE3
(5. Important: Verify if "IP Address Assignment" is set DHCP)
6. Click on "Assign the public IP address of a connection to a device"
7. Click "Edit"
8. On that list you select your PC and then apply.

Don't forget, "I would recommend turning DMZ on only when you go to play, and then turn it off straight afterwards every time. Furthermore, make sure you have good firewall software to protect your computer, and perhaps close unnecessary programs to prevent them from connecting to the internet and further placing the security of your PC at risk."

I hope that you can finally fix this annoying error and we will see on AoE3. :)

Sorry for my english.

SO I HAD TO BUMP THIS AGAIN I had this problem. Forwarded ports and all still got the Failed to join message.

MY FIX

If you have at one point had AOE3 regular game non steam game on your computer and deleted it there will still be files in DOCUMENTS, MY GAMES, AOE3. Delete the aoe3 folder. uninstall AOE3 through steam. Go to Program files, steam, steam apps, common, and you should see AOE3 folder. Delete that aswell. REINSTALL GAME FROM STEAM. Now you will have no multiplayer issues. Your welcome !

It's a problem of ISP ... u need to OPEN all ports. Use programs that control the network fully like
NET Limiter 4, there a few that really allow to control your computer in full like that one.
