Check out the aoe3 heaven site
http://aoe3.heavengames.com/

There should be some descriptions how to install maps. (since most maps are offered for download there)

What about the fact that the games were designed for people who installed the DVD version of the game, not the STEAM version?

I would like to install the Random Map "ALASKA". The instructions for that map say to <<Copy the "alaska.ddt" file to your "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\art\ui\random_map" folder.>>
Unfortunately, I don't have a folder like that on my computer. The closest thing I have is an extension saying:
C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age of Empires III\bin\art\ui\random_map
that has .ddt files from all the other maps already in that folder. But copying the file to that location did not make the map appear in my list of maps inside the game. What do you think?

Well, I've got the same case and I haven't found an answer to that yet!!

Place maps to C:\Users\%your windows login%\Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3\Scenario\
sound and etc. place in steamapps\common\Age of Empires III\bin\sounds etc.
then use sinleplayer - castom scenario

Custom random maps should be placed in my documents/my games/age of empires 3/ rm(vanilla) or rm2(the warchiefs) or rm3(asian dynasties) depending on what version the custom map is for.

For each custom map you need to have an .xs file and an xml file. These are the 2 files you move to the above directory.

Maps and scenarios are totally different. You dont place random maps scripts in the scenario folder, maps go in rm, rm2 or rm3 depending on which version the map is for.

Also check out here for new maps http://eso-community.net/viewforum.php?f=33

You can also download custom maps and scenarios from others online on eso, you just join their lobby and it will ask if you want to download.

The disc and steam version are the same. Those intructions are for the map ui, which shows whilst loading. You need an xs and xml file which is the main part of the map, they go in user-my document-my games-age of empires 3- rm(vanilla) or rm2(warchiefs) or rm3(asian dynasties) depending on which version the map was made for. Im pretty sure I have that map myself somewhere.

Lost 5.2 is not a scenario, it is a map (RM), therefore it will be located in Documents\My Games\Age of Empires 3\RM3\

If you want to host a game of Lost 5.2 and you already have the map, simply host a regular supremacy game, then in the game room tick "Custom Maps" and select Lost 5.2 from the map dropdown.
