Cannot use cached food?

I can't use cached food to play any birds. I have multiple cards that require one fish and I have two fish cached on one of my birds. (it's even in the same area where I want to play the new bird, the river) When I try to play a new bird it says i have no fish to spend.

I'm trying to understand this game. Tutorial broke halfway through. Playing it through once my birds are caching various food. Fish, Rats, etc. I can't find any explanation for what caching does.

What in the world does caching do if you can't actually use the food that you "cache"????

It is easy to misunderstand. Cached food cannot be used. It simply counts toward your final score. Only cache food when you have more of that food than you expect to use. For example, lets say that you are in the second to the last move of the game. Now let's say that you are about to get some fish from the birdhouse that you intend to combine with a rat that you already have, in order to play the Bald Eagle for 9 points. Let's also say that earlier you played the Blue Jay in the forest, which has a brown power that allows to to gain one wheat from the supply when activated, and gives you a choice of caching it or put in your personal supply. In this case you might want to cache the wheat, since there is no way that you will use it by the end of the game.

Yeah, so...as Avwriter alludes to...unless the/a played bird card specifically says, you may cache food and use it at a later time...caching means, storing food for end of game points.

Your comments imply that I have a CHOICE to add to my active food supply or to cache it. So far I'm not seeing that choice option. it seems like everything automatically caches the food.

What should I look for to choose to add the food to my active food supply instead of caching? Do most cards give me that choice? Or do most of them force cache with no option to add to active food supply?

It all depends upon which card you are playing. Some cards ONLY give the option to cache food. A few give a choice. When the choice is available, the game will ask you what you wish to do.

Okay so I guess I just haven't encountered the choice cards. Thank you all for your feedback. The game seems very beautiful and I'm sure it'll be relaxing once it's not confusing, lol. xD
