Wingspan

Complexity/Difficulty
I watched some vids about how to play this game and it looks extremely complex. I'm coming from straightforward but fun games like Carcassone, Splendor, Tides of Darkness, Sushi Go.

Should stay away? It looks overwhelming and hard to learn or teach to a friend quickly who hasn't played before.

It looks harder than it really is, but is definitely a decent step up from the games you mentioned. The tutorial does a good job explaining it, and once you "get" it there is great great great replay-ability. If you're willing to try taking on more of a challenge I'd say give it a go - you can probably get a refund from steam if after you do the tutorial you are still overwhelmed.

You can play Splendor? You'll be fine. It's basically about the same complexity, just more flavour text in Wingspan. The games not that difficult to play, but it has alot of depth.

Just pick the double birds. They can perform tasks inside a biom, which doesn't belong to that biom. This effectively gives you extra turns and is the one and only most overpowered strategy in the game. Boom you're an expert now.

Boardgamgeek's complexity rating might be a good reference for you - WIngspan seats at 2.39/5, while Carcassonne is at 1.91. Based on this, I think you can safely assume that Wingpsan is a nice step up, just like matthew.uhrich mentioned.

What are you talking about? I'm new to the game.

The game has plenty of choices and strategies and it's nice that each game plays out differently increasing replayability, but it's not exactly a brain burner.

You only do one of four things when it's your turn.

Play a bird card
Get food
Lay eggs
Draw cards

Playing the bird cards allow you to get more benefits from these actions as the game progresses.
Not all that complex really, but very engaging.

Not complex at all compared to something like Splendor. Really only 4 options per turn, plus some bird bonuses, and a point salad for final scoring. You'll have it down after a single game. Only drawback to this implementation is it's not easy to follow what the other players are doing. I'd prefer to watch them do their thing like in Castles of Burgundy.

I think its not complex at all, compared to most vid or board games. You just have to learn the rules, It took me the tutorial and 2 matches against ai to learn everything about the game.
Dont be put off by that.

I don't see how you can even compare this to Splendor. I haven't played Wingspan yet, but Splendor is about as simple as it gets. It's one of our favorite family games, but it's definitely not complex.
Easy to learn, challenging to master

I think the comparison is just to convey that this game is not complex at all. You have only four things you can do, and of course, the strategy is in deciding which of those four things to do when it's your turn. I'd say it's slightly more complex than Splendor from what I remember of playing Splendor.

For me,hard to learn, excruciating to master.

I get anxiety with these "modern" board games that try too hard to be complicated.
