5 minute timer between turns?!
Is this true? I saw this in a review and for someone that has never played the game, this seems totally wrong. A deal breaker for me if true.

Don't worry! You can choose to play the 24-hours-per-turn version, which if you play in real time is basically as if there were no time limit.

to be honest, 5 minutes between turns is super long... I'm hoping no one needs that amount of time :(

Five minutes is way too long for me. Even if you're utterly new, you shouldn't take longer than 3 minutes to determine your move. Fortunately I have yet to encounter someone who's actually taken all 5 minutes to make a move...

Sometimes you've got to go take care of business, that's when the 5 minutes comes in handy assuming you can get it done in 5.

Just out of curiosity, why would this be a deal breaker for you? Is there something preventing you from taking turns within the span of 5 minutes?

Three people playing at 5 minutes... there are 26 turns in a game (4 rounds of 8,7,6,5). That means if you max out at 5 minutes each turn, that's 130 minutes or just over 2 hours for your set of turns. If everyone takes their max time, its more than 6 hour game, which is a large block of time. The average game lasted about two 1/2 hours. Real time game of Terriforming Mars for three people online is about 45 minutes for total amount of turns. I know its fun for some people to meta game the experience, but most of us are looking for the two to three hour fix. I've got some gaming friends who love to do that marathon type of game, but I don't have time for it.

I haven't played an online game yet - but it would be nice if there were a few options (like in other boardgame ports I have on steam). So if you wanted a quicker game you could choose a 2 minute timer or three minutes. I think 5 should be the max for any online game that's not asynchronous! Particularly since some people once they see they are losing just milk clock hoping someone else quits so they don't get the bigger karma hit.

turn timer should be 3 min max
OmegaOm Sep 18, 2020 @ 11:13am
I think if you are playing PVP, timer should be 3 max. If it takes you longer then that, you should be playing AI until you get the hang of it.

Just had a few games with players that are new taking almost full timer. This is way too long to wait to play this game, like guy above mentioned when he calculated time it would take if all players took 5 min.

Makes you want to quit cause its taking too long but you cant quit or you lose rating. I think its disrespectful to use whole timer every turn. I am typing this now, cause I am waiting so long.

Interesting point on this 5 minute timer. I also believe it is way too long. In fact, I started 3 games at the same time and kept rotating between all 3. It was just the right amount of time for me to get a turn on each game without waiting for more than a few seconds. However, another issue is that after my first 2 games were completed it asked if I wanted to go back to the main menu, which I did. That game was still listed in my current games with a timer running. The timer ran out. Then it had a yellow ! alert on it. Clicking on the notification it told me "You took too long to take your turn and are the first player to leave. You lose 5 points of Karma." (I can only guess that is bad.) This was AFTER THE GAME WAS OVER. Needs to be fixed.

As I suggested in another thread, the devs should just copy Through the Ages. That app has a bunch of timing options, which is important because for some people 5 minutes is too slow and even 24 hours is too fast. There should be a range of times from 2 minutes to 3 days (and even, for friends, an infinite option), as well as a "time bank" of additional time you can dip into once per round that has to expire before you forfeit a game.

Just had 3 games in a row, times goes down 5 min, then player left. So I quit. I like pvp dont like playing AI.
People be respectful of other peoples time please when playing online.

Bought it, returned it. I went through the tutorial and do not get this game at all. It makes NO sense to me. I'm 65 and own hundreds of games and this one just does not make sense to me. I said it three times, I guess I meant it :)

It's beautiful, audio is great, interface works great, price is good. Guess I'm just old AND stupid.

I just had a game freeze (maybe?) I was waiting for p1 to take his turn, he went all the way down to 0:00, I was waiting for something to happen, nothing did. I eventually dropped back to the menu and there was a message that I'd been dropped for not taking my turn.
