Crash to Desktop during battles on Clockwork Island
Hi guys,

I have a severe problem: I purchased the Traitor's Keep DLC but I'm not able to continue playing because I always get a hard crash to Desktop when fighting on Clockwork Island.

First of all: My system is brand new, running absolutely stable with newest drivers installed and I played through the Fable 3 main game without any issues (about 60 great hours without any crashes!). After having played the main game I purchased and installed the Understone Quest Pack and played through it. With the Undestone DLC installed I already noticed two things: I got slow downs when entering a new level, but those "hangers" always disappeared after a minute. Furthermore, it sometimes happened that the camera got frozen to a spot. I could still move but the camera didn't follow the character until the character was moved off the screen. But I considered those things as minor issues and there were ne crashes associated with that.

Then, after having finished the Undestone DLC I purchased and installed the Traitor's Keep DLC. I played the first hour without any issues. Problems started when reaching the Clockwork Island. During the first battle against those mechanical machines I got the first crashes: "Fable III main executable has stopped working". After each crash I started the game again until I finally managed to kill all enemies (had to restart about 10 times).

Now I'm in the canal and this is where things are getting really bad. The mechanical beetles in this canal cause the game to crash only seconds after the fight started. By the way: The crash does not depend on the the weapon I choose: Regardless of I fight with sword, gun or magic. So it seems not to be the "magic animation bug" some people suffer from. But it may be related somehow to animations beacuse it seems to me as if some attack-animation of the beetles cause the crash - perhaps the purple "teleporter attack"?

This is what I already tried to solve the issue:
- Setting graphics details to lowest
- Switching graphics card from Nvidia Geforce to Intel IGP
- Deactivating sound adapter
- Deactivating network adapter (Offline mode)
- Running the game in compatibility mode

But nothing helped. I load my savegame and some seconds later I'm thrown to the Desktop. I neither have a chance to escape from the battle nor to finish the battle. So I can't continue playing. :-(

I appreciate any help.

Here my system details:
Intel Core i7-3770K
Nvidia Geforce GTX 670
8 GB RAM
Win7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Well like with my spell animation glitch to get through Understone, you can make slow progress if you take the brute force aproach and make a secondary save just before battles and then fire one or two shots then go back to sanctuary to save (this one seems more resistant to corrupting a save since its nearly an immediate crash).

Although I'm starting to wonder if maybe Traitor's Keep isn't the root cause of the spell animation bug as now that I think about it on my first play through it didn't pop up until I had traitor's keep down loaded.

As for the bugs my guess is it has something to do with the fact that their flier mode is an effect since they also have a crawling mode when your too far away.

I was already getting bad slowdowns before I finished the main quest, but I was able to handle them by lowering the process priority and alt-tabbing around.

After I completed the main quest I installed the Understone and Traitor's Keep DLCs. Now the game often slows down to a standstill when I enter a zone (while animations like water and foliage still run at normal speed), forcing me to fast-travel around until it works again.

Now I'm on Clockwork Island. First I couldn't get past the cutscene where the robots turn hostile until I lowered settings to a minimum, and now that I'm supposed to fight them, the game is frozen solid again, and I can't fix it by fast-traveling because the quest won't let me.

Stuck.

I finally found a way to get through the fights. It took a while and I still got a bunch of crashes, but it worked: I used the Vortex Spell to swirl monsters around. When being in the Vortex, they seem not to be able to do their buggy animation, which causes the game to crash. I used the spell together with the Blades spell. After loading the savegame you have to be very fast to lift as many enemies as possible into the air. After I had killed a bunch without a crash, I saved immediately. This way I got through it. It was tedious but it was possible this way.

In the meantime I got through the first fight on the island and now the beetles are crashing my system too. Tried the vortex trick, but they crash me way to quickly for me to be able to lift them all into the air. No luck. :-(

I've beaten the game twice and have played through all of the DLC at least once without any issues. Last year I noticed crashes when performing a torrent of magic spells, but I was eventually able to fix the issue somehow. Now, I am getting the same exact crashes that you are talking about ... on Clockwork Island, as soon as you descend the metal stairs into the room with the 3 robots. It crashes no matter the weapon I use or the style of attack. I know it can not be my system malfunctioning or under-performing as I have an AMD 1090T (6-core processor)clocked at 3.83 GHz, and a Radeon 6970 with a complimentary Ageia PhysX Accelerator. Both my CPU and my GPU are water-cooled. I'm thinking I may have to uninstall the game, and disable any anti-virus or background software while reinstalling Fable 3. Although I am a Steam user, I purchased my copy of Fable 3 from Microsoft (Games For Windows Marketplace). I love Microsoft and their products, I own two Xbox 360s and a plethora of games purchased from their GFWL Marketplace, however, it seems that they are really missing the boat by not being more attentive to their PC gaming audience and providing us with more games to play on the PC. Heck, Halo 2 for Windows Vista was released in 2007, and the very first update disabled voice chat ... they never issued another update to fix this issue. Hopefully, with their present president resigning, they will get someone in charge that has an open ear to PC gamers and their needs, as well as an interest to improve interactivity with their entire Live audience, whether on console OR PC. Cross-platform gaming via PC and Xbox would be a huge hit, and the integrity of the gaming experience could be ensured via "Gold Only" online servers. I'm really surprised that a fix for Fable 3 hasn't been issued since I have read so many complaints about system crashes and so forth. I know the game has very high-end graphics and beautiful detail and textures, but with the systems that some of us are playing with, rendering this game in max detail should not be an issue.

I hear you. don't know if the PC will get the fixes needed when they can sell more xboxes. I will not get another microsoft game untill they do hear us and stop with the crap they have been doing. I am a PC gammer for life so if it means converting to linix then so be it.
